PG&E has
\nsubmitted an application to surrender its license for the Potter
\nValley Project, and to remove the two defunct dams in the Eel River
\nheadwaters. This is a smart economic move, as the project has not
\ngenerated electricity for over 4 years, and what it did produce over
\nthe last 20 years was less than 1% of PG&E\u2019s entire hydropower
\nportfolio. This failed hydroelectric project is costing ratepayers
\nabout a million dollars a year for absolutely no benefit, while
\ncontinuing to cause significant ecological harm to the Eel watershed.<\/p>\n

We are currently
\nat a critical juncture \u2013 the public\u2019s first opportunity to speak
\nto federal regulators about this project and encourage them to
\napprove PG&E\u2019s plan for dam removal with no delay. The Federal
\nEnergy Regulatory Commission (FERC) need to hear from our community
\nabout how this plan is broadly supported and benefits public
\ninterest. The comment deadline has just been extended, we now have
\nuntil Friday, December 19 at 2 p.m. to file comments.<\/p>\n

The
\ndisinformation campaign coming from the MAGA movement has been
\nwell-funded and successful in generating ill-informed opposition to
\nthis project. Water users who stand to benefit from a more reliable
\ndiversion infrastructure, or water users who may have never received
\nany Eel River water, are voicing loud opposition. We must be louder
\nto ensure the Eel River dams are removed in time to save our
\nstruggling native fish. You comment can make a difference!<\/p>\n

The Potter Valley
\nProject includes an inter-basin diversion of water from the Eel River
\nto the Russian River. The current plan allows for the Eel Russian
\nProject Authority to use some of the existing infrastructure to
\ndevelop a new dam-free diversion under different rules that are more
\nprotective of Eel River habitat, but will continue to provide water
\nsupplies to users in the Russian River.<\/p>\n

Dam removal is
\nthe single most important action we can take to support recovery of
\nthe Eel\u2019s still-wild native fish, and allow steelhead to return to
\nover 280 miles of prime habitat in the upper basin. Dam removal will
\nalso remove habitat that is ideal for invasive pikeminnow,
\nwhich thrive in the warmer waters of the Lake Pillsbury Reservoir.<\/p>\n
