(Chicago Tribune archive) <\/p>\n<p> (Decade 1960s)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1960:<\/strong> After returning from an expedition to the Himalayas financed by World Book Encyclopedia under the leadership of Sir Edmund Hillary, Lincoln Park Zoo Director R. Marlon Perkins said the yeti \u2014 otherwise known as the abominable snowman \u2014 is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-marlin-perkins-disputes\/163273919\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201conly a legend.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Perkins had hoped, if the abominable snowman did exist, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-the-literary-spotlight-b\/163273987\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bring back a specimen<\/a> for the zoo. A Sherpa guide claimed to have the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-a-snowmans-scalp-here-i\/163273828\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scalp from a female yeti<\/a> his ancestors got drunk then killed, but upon examination by scientists from the Field Museum thought it might be man-made. \u201cIt proved to be from the hide of an antelope,\u201d Perkins said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Chicago Bears quarterback Jack Concannon gets the pass off before Green Bay Packers tackle Mike McCoy can get to him. (Chicago Tribune historical photo)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1970:<\/strong>\u00a0The Chicago Bears played their <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-bear-defense-kos-star\/186647831\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last game at Wrigley Field<\/a>. Anthony Laurino, who bragged of learning politics at the knees of \u201cBathhouse\u201d John Coughlin and Michael \u201cHinky Dink\u201d Kenna, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-ex-ald-anthony-laurino\/153847683\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-ex-ald-anthony-laurino\/153847683\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicted<\/a> on charges that he hired dozens of friends, relatives and cronies for no-work city jobs \u2014 at a cost to the taxpayers of nearly $1.5 million in pay and health benefits. A month later, he was further accused of forcing the wife of a close friend to kick back about $77,000 \u2014 or half of her pay \u2014 from a <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-ex-ald-anthony-laurino\/153847146\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-ex-ald-anthony-laurino\/153847146\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ghost-payrolling job<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"FYsyBwQETU\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/09\/the-dishonor-roll-chicago-aldermen-city-council-and-other-officials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Dishonor Roll: Chicago officials<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While Laurino denied the charges, several members of his family were convicted, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-ex-ald-anthony-laurino\/153847477\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-ex-ald-anthony-laurino\/153847477\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his wife<\/a> and a daughter,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-marie-damico-daughter\/153847335\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-marie-damico-daughter\/153847335\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marie D\u2019Amico<\/a>. The indictments came a year after he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-ald-anthony-laurino-qui\/153847004\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-ald-anthony-laurino-qui\/153847004\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stepped down<\/a> as alderman \u2014 with his daughter taking over his council seat \u2014 and Laurino\u2019s trial was indefinitely postponed in 1996 because of his ill health. He became alderman in 1965 and his political career on the City Council spanned nearly three decades.
