{"id":44488,"date":"2025-07-06T22:52:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-06T22:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/44488\/"},"modified":"2025-07-06T22:52:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-06T22:52:10","slug":"freddy-the-nyc-bodega-cat-is-killed-by-dogs-as-owner-pals-cheered-activists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/44488\/","title":{"rendered":"Freddy the NYC bodega cat is killed by dogs as owner, pals \u2018cheered&#8217;: activists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A beloved Manhattan bodega cat was horrifically mauled to death by two pit bulls last week as the dogs\u2019 heartless female owner and pals \u201cwatched and cheered,\u201d animal rescuers claimed to The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Tragic adorable tabby Freddy was attacked around 9 p.m. Friday outside Michelle Flowers, where he lived, in Washington Heights, according to volunteer rescuers with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DLkSRq7uHur\/?locale=Online%2Bentertainment%2C%2Breal%2Bperson%2C%2Belectronic%2Bchess%2Band%2Bcards%2C%2Blottery%2C%2Bsports%2C%2Bcomprehensive%2Breputation%2B%28Telegram%3A%2B%40UUjd888888%29.nrbc&amp;hl=en&amp;img_index=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Cat Collective NY<\/a>, who said they looked at surveillance video and spoke with witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>Animal rescuers at Cat Collective NY are demanding \u201cJustice for Freddy.\u201d  Instagram \/ @catcollectiveny<\/p>\n<p>The pit bulls\u2019 owner and pals then smoked, danced and ate food while taking photos and mimicking the grisly scene, the group told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone deliberately set dogs on a defenseless cat while people watched and cheered,\u201d said Dan Rimada of Bodega Cats of New York \u2014 calling the incident pure \u201cevil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the store was closed and its owners were home during the attack, local residents who saw the gruesome event alerted a local feeder with Cat Collective, which in turn informed the flower-shop-bodega owners, who had rescued Freddy in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Freddy (bottom left, circled in red) was cruelly allowed to be mauled to death by two pit bulls (right), activists said. Instagram \/ @catcollectiveny<\/p>\n<p>The store owner \u201ccollapsed in tears\u201d when rescuers broke the news to him.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, volunteers took poor Freddy\u2019s remains in a garbage bag to a vet and spent about $400 on the cat\u2019s cremation, said Emily Petit of Cat Collective. <\/p>\n<p>Freddy the striped shop cat was known to bask in the sun, eagerly receive loving pats from neighbors and \u201cbrought smiles to so many,\u201d Cat Collective NY said in an Instagram tribute. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLosing him feels like a terrible injustice, and we must ensure that the person responsible for this heartbreaking act faces consequences.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cat Collective took Freddy\u2019s remains to be cremated, volunteers said. Instagram \/ @catcollectiveny<\/p>\n<p>The rescuers are now seeking to identify the dogs\u2019 owner and to warn others of the attack. Cat Collective is offering a $200 reward for the names of the bystanders, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone with information needs to contact the police immediately,\u201d said Rimada, who recently teamed up with city Councilman Keith Powers to \u201cfully legalize\u201d bodega cats in the city by having them recognized officially as pets, thus better protecting them.<\/p>\n<p>Still, \u201charm or death to an animal caused by another animal is not a criminal matter,\u201d an NYPD rep has told The Post \u2013 a matter that has left owners of mauled pets with <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/29\/us-news\/more-nyc-dogs-mauled-by-other-pooches-without-consequence-as-state-bill-to-close-legal-loophole-stalls-should-not-be-happening\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">no avenues for justice outside of civil court.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A state bill to close the legal loophole, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/08\/us-news\/grisly-ny-dog-attack-inspires-new-bill-pennys-law-to-hold-negligent-pet-owners-accountable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">dubbed Penny\u2019s Law<\/a> after Penny the Chihuahua was mauled by two pit bulls on the Upper West Side in May, remains stalled in committee.
