Elizabeth Warren, prosecutors said<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The woman who was arrested after <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/tourist-was-repeatedly-stabbed-inside-macys-changing-baby-bathroom-11868345\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allegedly stabbing a tourist<\/a> at Macy\u2019s flagship store in New York City reportedly had a history of mental illness.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_4-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Kerri Aherne \u2014 the 43-year-old woman who is facing charges including attempted murder and assault in connection with the incident \u2014 made her first court appearance on Friday, Dec. 12, where it was determined that she would be held without bail, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7ny.com\/amp\/post\/macys-herald-square-nyc-stabbing-criminal-history-revealed-woman-accused-mother-changing-diaper\/18283006\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WABC<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/macys-stabbing-suspect-history-mental-illness-released-psych-ward-day-attack\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fox News<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/12\/us-news\/homeless-woman-accused-of-stabbing-tourist-inside-nyc-macys-bathroom-was-released-from-psych-hospital-morning-of-attack\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Post<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_6-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Prosecutors with the Manhattan District Attorney\u2019s Office said during her arraignment, per the outlets, that she had been released after a year-long stay at a Manhattan psychiatric ward on the morning of Dec. 11 \u2014 hours before the alleged attack happened \u2014 and wandered into the Macy\u2019s flagship store.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_8-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cShe had purchased a knife at Macy\u2019s and looked for someone to kill because voices in her head told her that she had to kill someone or else she would be killed,\u201d Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Paul Barker told the court, per the New York Post.\n<\/p>\n<p> Macy\u2019s in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Sipa via AP Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Prosecutors said she then entered the Macy\u2019s bathroom on the seventh floor and stabbed the victim \u2014 a 39-year-old woman from California \u2014 as she was <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/tourist-was-repeatedly-stabbed-inside-macys-changing-baby-bathroom-11868345\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">changing her baby<\/a>, WABC reported. The baby fell from the changing table to the floor, though was not injured in the incident, per the outlet.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Law enforcement officers with the New York Police Department responded to Macy\u2019s Herald Square on Dec. 11 at around 3:15 p.m. local time after a report of an assault, the NYPD confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Police said the woman \u2014 who was later identified by the NYP as an employee for the Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department \u2014 sustained \u201cmultiple stab wounds to her back and a laceration to her left arm.&#8221; She was transported to the hospital and was discharged on Friday.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The injured woman&#8217;s husband told the NYP that she &#8220;is better,&#8221; following the incident.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_23-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Aherne was charged with attempted murder, two counts of assault, criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child, the NYPD said.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_25-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Prosecutors said in a criminal complaint, per WABC and Fox News that Aherne, who is from Massachusetts, told police that she had been hospitalized for psychiatric problems. The 43-year-old was arrested in 2018 in her home state for posting on Facebook that she wanted to kill Sen.
