After more than 30 years, MetroPaint \u2014 a pioneer of paint recycling programs across the country \u2014 plans to close<\/a> its North Portland facility. <\/p>\n

\u201cMetroPaint will continue to recycle, remake and sell paint through at least the end of 2025,\u201d reads a notice on the website<\/a>. \u201cMetro will provide the closing date and other information as it becomes available.\u201d <\/p>\n

Metro, the regional government, has been taking in leftover paint as part of its hazardous waste collection program since 1992. Over the past three decades, it has accumulated millions of gallons of latex paint \u2014 keeping it out of landfills and repurposing it for sale<\/a> out of its MetroPaint Outlet at 825 N. Basin Ave. <\/p>\n

The outlet currently offers 12 distinct paint colors, all of which will be sold for 50% off while supplies last, according to the website. <\/p>\n

MetroPaint\u2019s early success helped launch similar recycling efforts on a national scale. <\/p>\n

In 2009, the Oregon Legislature launched the first \u201cpaint product stewardship\u201d law<\/a>, requiring manufacturers to develop a system to reduce waste and safely dispose of unused paint. <\/p>\n

The law was then endorsed by the state Department of Environmental Quality, who brought on the nonprofit PaintCare to help steward Oregon\u2019s paint recycling program. Today, PaintCare<\/a> operates hundreds of paint drop-off sites across 11 states, according to its website. <\/p>\n

But now that MetroPaint is closing, where can Oregonians recycle their half-full buckets? <\/p>\n

PaintCare will continue to facilitate paint recycling across Oregon, operating 194 year-round drop-off sites throughout the state. <\/p>\n
