{"id":445306,"date":"2025-12-13T23:38:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-13T23:38:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/445306\/"},"modified":"2025-12-13T23:38:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T23:38:13","slug":"philly-school-district-hosts-first-ever-sleep-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/445306\/","title":{"rendered":"Philly School District hosts first-ever sleep out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj4ld5wd001b01s1sdsu2q92@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) \u2014 Three weeks after a National Sleep Out brought hundreds of fans to Citizens Bank Park, the School District of Philadelphia held its own in Northeast Philly to raise money and support efforts to end youth homelessness.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj4lrin6001k357vah3rch8l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">\u201cThis is just an opportunity for district staff that support families to kind of really get a deeper understanding of the 10,000 children across our city that don\u2019t have a warm, safe place to sleep every night,\u201d said Dr. Brenda Elliott, associate superintendent for student life and innovation at the School District of Philadelphia. Elliott was one of many staff members who were at the Northeast Community Propel Academy on Friday night for the district\u2019s first-ever sleep out.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj4lrjdd001q357v8wp8xr9x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">Lu\u2019Crecha Pompey used to work at the Pennsylvania Branch of Covenant House, but now leads the school district\u2019s Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness program.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj4m3bmj0034357vp955keqz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">She is no stranger to sleepouts and hopes fellow school district staff members left with some valuable lessons about what some students in Philadelphia experience daily without stable housing.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj4m3bmj0035357v9st0po4o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">\u201cIn this sleep out, I know we\u2019re going to experience a lot, and one of the most things we are going to experience is the discomfort\u2026 that\u2019s what I want people to take with them because this discomfort we\u2019ve chosen to experience for this one night, our kids have to experience because they have no choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj4m3bmj0036357v75h0ryrj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">So far this school year, Pompey said the program has provided resources for more than 4,400 students experiencing housing insecurity.
