{"id":44617,"date":"2025-07-07T00:04:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-07T00:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/44617\/"},"modified":"2025-07-07T00:04:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-07T00:04:09","slug":"republican-who-ran-for-nyc-mayor-backs-eric-adams-urges-trump-to-step-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/44617\/","title":{"rendered":"Republican who ran for NYC mayor backs Eric Adams, urges Trump to step in"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Republican who ran for mayor in 2021 is now throwing his support <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/04\/us-news\/new-pro-adams-poll-still-has-nyc-mayor-trailing-cuomo-by-double-digits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">behind incumbent Eric Adams<\/a> \u2014 as he urged President Trump to step in to help on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Fernando Mateo, who is a spokesman for the United Bodegas of America, is asking the commander-in-chief to convince Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa to drop out as this year\u2019s GOP candidate to get Adams to appear on the Republican Party line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, we need the president\u2019s help, \u201d Mateo said <a href=\"https:\/\/dcs-spotify.megaphone.fm\/WABC9266962287.mp3?key=911527e904ab112da7e861022b1025cb&amp;request_event_id=9c035469-3496-4b5f-ac9d-307434c18894&amp;session_id=9c035469-3496-4b5f-ac9d-307434c18894&amp;timetoken=1751836127_DB2ED4091FE6E0D3609E14B5E7EC3A8E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on WABC\u2019s 770 <\/a>the \u201cCats Roundtable\u201d program with host John Catsimatidis. \u201cWe need the President to basically tell Curtis Sliwa, \u2018Hey, drop out of the race. Give that line to Eric Adams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fernando Mateo is asking Curtis Sliwa to drop out as this year\u2019s GOP candidate to get Adams to appear on the Republican Party line. Michael Nigro<\/p>\n<p>Adams, a Democrat, didn\u2019t run in his party\u2019s primary last month but is pursuing re-election as an independent. He\u2019ll face an uphill battle in the deeply blue city against Democratic Party nominee Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist.<\/p>\n<p>Also appearing on a minor party line is Democrat Andrew Cuomo, the former governor who lost to Mamdani in the primary. Mateo said Cuomo could only be a \u201cspoiler\u201d in November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/01\/us-news\/trump-praises-mayor-adams-re-election-bid-and-threatens-zohran-mamdani-with-arrest-if-he-interferes-with-ice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make sure that Eric wins<\/a>. Andrew Cuomo should not be on the ballot,\u201d Mateo said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, we need the president\u2019s help, \u201d Mateo said on WABC\u2019s 770 the \u201cCats Roundtable\u201d program with host John Catsimatidis. If [Cuomo and Sliwa] were to drop out, and Eric Adams had the support of every New Yorker, there\u2019s no way that we could lose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mateo lost to GOP hopeful Sliwa by a resounding 40 percentage points four years ago, before Sliwa lost the general election to Adams.<\/p>\n<p>Sliwa said he isn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/26\/us-news\/defiant-gop-candidate-curtis-sliwa-insists-on-staying-in-nyc-mayoral-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">going anywhere<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Adams, a Democrat, didn\u2019t run in his party\u2019s primary last month but is pursuing re-election as an independent. Matthew McDermott<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI crushed Mateo in the Republican primary four years ago. He hasn\u2019t been seen with a Republican since,\u201d Sliwa quipped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s over. I\u2019m on the ballot. There\u2019s no way to get me out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adams is unpopular with Republicans as he is with Democrats, Sliwa said, citing polling consistently showing the mayor\u2019s high negative ratings.<\/p>\n<p>Catsimatidis, the billionaire WABC owner, is pushing Adams\u2019 re-election bid as an independent. Matthew McDermott<\/p>\n<p>He had no comment when asked if he\u2019s spoken to Trump about backing Adams.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, former <a href=\"https:\/\/dcs-spotify.megaphone.fm\/WABC8042997593.mp3?key=fae82da26956263b6a02b01ca00fc832&amp;request_event_id=c315baa7-73b2-4bbc-a8c5-0865a69ed70c&amp;session_id=c315baa7-73b2-4bbc-a8c5-0865a69ed70c&amp;timetoken=1751837197_EDE4C3085738EF1AC9D0BBA2DE857271\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gov. David Paterson <\/a>said Mamdani, as the Democratic nominee, will be \u201chard to beat\u201d in the general election and likened his rise as a left wing version of President Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe support that Mamdani is receiving \u2026 the number of people he\u2019s registering, the number of people who go to his rallies \u2026 if I blinked my eyes 10 years ago, there was another person who was able to do that, and his name is Donald Trump, whose political ideology is the polar opposite of what Mamdani\u2019s might be,\u201d Paterson said in a different segment of WABC\u2019s the \u201cCats Roundtable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Gov. David Paterson said Mamdani, as the Democratic nominee, will be \u201chard to beat\u201d in the general election.
