The Mets, who also saw Edwin D\u00edaz leave in free agency for the Dodgers<\/a>, continued to reshape their roster, agreeing to a two-year, $40 million deal with Polanco, The Post confirmed.\u00a0<\/p>\n Polanco, 32, is coming off one of his best offensive seasons last year with the Mariners.\u00a0<\/p>\n Sources told The Post\u2019s Jon Heyman that Polanco, mostly a middle infielder throughout his career with Seattle and Minnesota, would be used at a number of positions with the Mets, but would primarily serve as a first baseman and DH.\u00a0<\/p>\n How that fits with David Stearns\u2019 stated desire to improve the team\u2019s run prevention remains to be seen, as Polanco\u2019s defense has slipped and he\u2019s never played first base \u2014 but the Mets value his versatility, as well as his bat.\u00a0<\/p>\n Jorge Polanco will now call Citi Field home. Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images<\/p>\n The switch-hitter bounced back from a subpar 2024 season to put up 26 homers, an OPS of .821 and a career high OPS-plus of 134 last year in 138 games.\u00a0<\/p>\n He also played 38 games at second base last season, but primarily served as a DH for the Mariners after appearing in 112 games at second the year prior.\u00a0<\/p>\n Polanco will replace at least some of the power lost by Alonso, who signed with Baltimore<\/a>, and Nimmo, traded to Texas<\/a> in exchange for Semien earlier in the offseason.\u00a0<\/p>\n Pete Alonso left for the Orioles. AP<\/p>\n Semien is among the best defensive second basemen in the majors, but his offense has fallen off considerably the past two years.\u00a0<\/p>\n Signing the veteran Polanco to a short-term deal matches much of what the Mets have done so far this offseason.\u00a0<\/p>\n They walked away from Alonso because they weren\u2019t willing to go near the five years he got from Baltimore, let alone for the price tag.\u00a0<\/p>\n And that\u2019s after Stearns swapped Nimmo, with five more years left on his deal at 32 years old, for Semien, 35, who has three years remaining before free agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n As far as this season, the Mets still have work to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n If they do put Polanco at first, that leaves Semien at second, Francisco Lindor at shortstop and Brett Baty at third \u2014 with Mark Vientos, Luisangel Acu\u00f1a and Ronny Mauricio battling for bench spots, and Jeff McNeil still on the roster.\u00a0<\/p>\n Seattle Mariners\u2019 Jorge Polanco runs on his two-RBI double against the Los Angeles Angels during the first inning of a baseball game Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, in Seattle.
