Fort Worth has never\u00a0lacked for\u00a0local legends, but every now and then one shows up on four feet instead of two \u2014 and in Henry\u2019s case, with a tail that\u00a0seemed to sweep\u00a0the whole city into his orbit. According to information from the City of Fort Worth\u2019s website<\/a>, the black Lab with the velvet gaze and famously gentle manner spent more than a decade serving as Fort Worth Animal Care & Control\u2019s most trusted public face, a canine diplomat whose quiet presence spoke louder than any press release ever could.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Henry\u2019s story began in 2011, when he arrived at the Chuck & Brenda Silcox Animal Shelter in rough shape. He was thin, sick, and out of second chances \u2014 until Brandon Bennett, then the City\u2019s Code Compliance Director, spotted him and sensed something worth saving. What followed was a slow, steady restoration \u2014 the kind of\u00a0recovery\u00a0only patience, medical\u00a0know-how, and a stubborn belief in possibility can achieve. By the time Henry grew strong enough to trot comfortably across a room, he had also formed a bond with Bennett that would last the rest of the dog\u2019s long life.\u00a0They even retired side by side<\/a>\u00a0earlier\u00a0this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once healthy, Henry threw himself into public service with the sort of earnest devotion Texans tend to appreciate. He padded through\u00a0special events, delighted schoolchildren, joined former mayor Betsy Price on community visits, and became the shelter\u2019s most persuasive advocate for the animals left waiting behind its doors. He\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0merely a mascot \u2014 he was a working dog with a mission, guiding Fort Worth toward a deeper understanding of the needs of its homeless pets.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With the help of generous local donors, Henry helped raise more than a million dollars to build a dedicated medical treatment ward at the Silcox center \u2014 a facility that opened in 2014 and changed the shelter\u2019s ability to save sick and injured animals. As his reputation grew, so did the scale of his impact. Supporters eventually rallied\u00a0nearly $5 million\u00a0in\u00a0additional\u00a0funds to construct that treatment ward and, later, secure a bond package for a modern shelter. The city\u2019s live-release rate soared, earning Fort Worth recognition as one of the most pet-friendly communities in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Henry\u00a0lived to\u00a016 \u2014 a full, generous life \u2014 and passed away on Nov.\u00a026, surrounded by Bennett and Barry Alexander, the superintendent who served as his handler and steadfast companion. For Alexander, the loss was personal as well as civic. He described Henry as a colleague, a friend, and a presence felt across city departments and across the state.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Even now, Henry\u2019s influence endures. His service is preserved in an award-winning\u00a0video,\u00a0his legacy is reflected in the thousands of animals who survived because he once did, and his memory is honored through donations made to Fort Worth Animal Care & Control.\u00a0<\/p>\n
