After 20 years and 17 seasons, it\u2019s tough to imagine a world where \u201cIt\u2019s Always Sunny in Philadelphia\u201d isn\u2019t on television, but there was a point where one member of its reliable ensemble \u2014\u00a0which consists of Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton<\/a>, Rob McElhenney (aka Rob Mac), Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito<\/a> \u2014\u00a0almost bowed out. At the July 1 PaleyLive 20th anniversary panel (via People<\/a>), Howerton revealed that prior to the start of Season 12, which broadcast on FXX<\/a> in 2017, he told the creative team, \u201cLook, I just don\u2019t want to wear out our welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was worried that maybe we had sort of peaked or something, and I just was like, you know, we\u2019ve been doing this for a long time. And I think I was also anxious,\u201d Howerton said. \u201cI had not figured out yet how to stretch myself and be able to do other things that I wanted to do with my career outside of the show\u2026 I just hadn\u2019t figured out how to do that yet. I was aching to do other things, and so I was starting to feel a little boxed in, frankly.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cast was insistent, saying that they did not want the show to end. He simply said, \u201cOh, well I can\u2019t stop you.\u201d \u201cAnd then Seasons 13 and 14, I came back as an actor but I wasn\u2019t in the writers\u2019 room.\u201d<\/p>\n

Howerton had made appearances in many other series, including \u201cThe Mindy Project\u201d and \u201cFargo,\u201d but after he \u201cfigured out how to do that\u201d \u2014 meaning juggle additional projects \u2014\u00a0he would take on such hefty assignments as the sitcom \u201cA.P. Bio\u201d<\/a> and films like \u201cThe Hunt\u201d and \u201cBlackberry.\u201d<\/a> Meanwhile, \u201cIt\u2019s Always Sunny\u201d kept going, and so did he.<\/p>\n

\u201c[They] just kept writing it and kept writing him in,\u201d McElhenney said, the show\u2019s official creator. \u201cAnd we\u2019re like, he\u2019s just gonna eventually say he\u2019s coming back. That\u2019s what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Always Sunny\u201d will drop its first two episodes of its 17th season, which will contain eight episodes, on July 9. Its season premiere will include the highly-anticipated second part<\/a> of a crossover event<\/a> with fellow Philadelphia-set sitcom \u201cAbbott Elementary.\u201d An episode of that series with guest appearances from the entire \u201cSunny\u201d cast aired on ABC in January.<\/p>\n
