{"id":446748,"date":"2025-12-14T15:58:26","date_gmt":"2025-12-14T15:58:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/446748\/"},"modified":"2025-12-14T15:58:26","modified_gmt":"2025-12-14T15:58:26","slug":"hong-kongs-biggest-pro-democracy-party-votes-to-disband-after-more-than-30-years-of-activism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/446748\/","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong&#8217;s biggest pro-democracy party votes to disband after more than 30 years of activism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HONG KONG (AP) \u2014 Hong Kong\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hong-kong-china-democratic-party-disbanded-b976f875d830199d929cefc6c3c0dca7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biggest pro-democracy party<\/a> voted Sunday to dissolve after more than 30 years of activism, marking the end of an era of the Chinese semiautonomous <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/hong-kong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">city<\/a> \u2018s once-diverse political landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Party chairperson Lo Kin-hei said the political environment was \u201cone important point\u201d among the factors they considered, and about 97% of members\u2019 ballots were in support of its liquidation. He said it is the best way forward for its members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet as the times have shifted, we now, with deep regret, must bring this chapter to a close,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Party veterans had earlier told The Associated Press that some members were warned of consequences if the party didn\u2019t shut down.<\/p>\n<p>Its demise reflects the dwindling freedoms promised to the former British colony when it returned to China\u2019s rule in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Arrests and shutdowns during Beijing\u2019s crackdown<\/p>\n<p>China imposed a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hong-kong-national-security-law-five-years-restaurants-be9ba88d5af8e039558007c64c5247e4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">national security law<\/a> in June 2020, following massive anti-government protests the year before, saying it was necessary for the city\u2019s stability. Under the law, many leading activists, including the Democratic Party\u2019s former chairs Albert Ho and Wu Chi-wai and other former lawmakers, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/47-activists-explainer-national-security-hong-kong-3da0cf03e08624671740f763bd9d8dc2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were arrested.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-0e0000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Jimmy Lai, founder of the pro-democracy Apple Daily newspaper, was also charged under the law. Lai will <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jimmy-lai-national-security-trial-explainer-4e0532c04de4d04b04f498f4f356d49a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hear his verdict<\/a> on Monday. Apple Daily was one of the vocal independent outlets shut down over the past five years.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of civil society groups have also closed, including the second-largest pro-democracy party, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hong-kong-civic-party-disbands-90ba129fecffc65de4e79e29b8e1e240\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Civic Party<\/a> and a group that organized <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hong-kong-tiananmen-vigil-security-law-appeal-sedition-e68c5ec1563b7d68faf746aa4b495555\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">annual vigils<\/a> commemorating the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown.<\/p>\n<p>In June, the League of Social Democrats, which had remained active in holding tiny street protests in recent years, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/league-social-democrats-disbands-prodemocracy-party-hong-7618d8dba691a2342625fed25572fc57\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced its closure<\/a>, citing immense political pressure.<\/p>\n<p>A moderate opposition party filled with political stars<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic Party, founded in 1994, was a moderate opposition party that pushed for universal suffrage in electing the city\u2019s leader for decades. Prominent party members include <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/88be6f6df5456d86271d7b47d4f36b95\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Martin Lee<\/a>, nicknamed the city\u2019s \u201cfather of democracy,\u201d Ho, former leader of the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tiananmen-crackdown-1989-35th-anniversary-overseas-commemoration-0154eafea41ddcbc957a37b2df3811e1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">group that organized Tiananmen vigils,<\/a> and journalist-turned-activist Emily Lau.<\/p>\n<p>It once held multiple legislative seats and amassed dozens of directly elected district councillors who helped residents with issues in their households and municipal matters. Some of its former members joined the government as senior officials.<\/p>\n<p>Its willingness to negotiate with Beijing led to its proposal being included in a 2010 political reform package \u2014 a move that drew harsh criticism from some members and other democracy advocates who wanted more sweeping changes.<\/p>\n<p>As new pro-democracy groups grew, the party\u2019s influence declined. But when the 2019 protests swept Hong Kong, the party\u2019s activism won widespread support again.<\/p>\n<p>During Beijing\u2019s crackdown, the Democratic Party has turned into more like a pressure group. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hong-kong-electoral-overhaul-district-council-596943465285710eab46d5f67a1b18fd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Electoral overhauls<\/a> that were designed to ensure only \u201cpatriots\u201d administer the city effectively shut out all pro-democracy politicians in the legislature and district councils.<\/p>\n<p>The party pressed on by holding news conferences on livelihood issues. It even submitted opinions on a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hong-kong-new-security-law-explainer-633e91d7d3aef09381b349282a7dec1f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">homegrown national security legislation<\/a> before it was enacted in March 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the party decided to set up a task force to look into the procedures involved in dissolving itself, and its leadership <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hong-kong-china-democratic-party-disband-376b56ca84ab8777eacc4ad25e6d9fb0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">secured members\u2019 mandate<\/a> to move closer to this goal.<\/p>\n<p>Regression of freedoms<\/p>\n<p>Former chairperson Yeung Sum in Sunday\u2019s news conference said the party\u2019s disbandment indicated the regression of Hong Kong from being a free and liberal society.
