Forget heading west \u2014 you don\u2019t have to travel far from Philly to ski or snowboard. Black diamond trails, beginner hills, and apr\u00e8s-ski experiences abound from Virginia to Vermont, so grab your gear and hit the lifts and shred some gnar (or simply be a powder princess on the bunny slopes). Whatever your style, you\u2019ll find it here.<\/p>\n

As president of the Philly Freeriders Ski & Snowboard Club<\/a> \u2014 a group of 4,000-plus snow-sports enthusiasts that formed over a decade ago \u2014 Doylestown\u2019s Matt Patel-Schneider knows how to shred powder. He started skiing in elementary school, and now he\u2019s an expert who seeks adventure off-piste. And while his club\u2019s members meet as far as Whistler or Chamonix, they\u2019ll still tear up mountains closer to home.<\/p>\n

For day trips, Blue Mountain Resort<\/strong><\/a> is Patel-Schneider\u2019s favorite. The mountain\u2019s short, steep runs make it the region\u2019s most challenging, he says \u2014 plus, it\u2019s home to the country\u2019s largest tubing park. He also recommends Montage Mountain<\/strong><\/a>, Camelback Resort<\/strong><\/a>, Jack Frost\/Big Boulder<\/strong><\/a>, and Roundtop Mountain Resort<\/strong><\/a>. The latter, in Lewisberry, has tricky terrain to please advanced skiers, while Camelback\u2019s year-round indoor waterpark makes it perfect for families.<\/p>\n

For a weekend, Patel-Schneider drives to Vermont\u2019s Killington Resort<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cThey call it the Beast of the East for a reason,\u201d he says of the massive resort \u2014 larger than any in Pennsylvania or New Jersey. Killington also gets ample snow, and there\u2019s a lively apr\u00e8s-ski scene. If you want a charming ski town, though, Patel-Schneider suggests Ludlow\u2019s Okemo Mountain<\/strong><\/a>. \u2014 C.P.W.<\/p>\n
