{"id":447616,"date":"2025-12-15T01:22:18","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T01:22:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/447616\/"},"modified":"2025-12-15T01:22:18","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T01:22:18","slug":"france-calls-to-delay-crunch-mercosur-vote-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/447616\/","title":{"rendered":"France calls to delay crunch Mercosur vote \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Denmark, which holds the presidency of the Council of the EU, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-vote-mercosur-trade-deal-take-place-next-week-denmark-confirms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has vowed to hold the vote<\/a> in time for European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-mercosur-deal-latin-america-commission-trade-deal-brazil-uruguay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fly to Brazil on Dec. 20<\/a> to sign the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Several countries warn that the holdup risks ultimately killing the trade deal, concerned that further stalling it could embolden opposition in the European Parliament or complicate next steps when Paraguay, which is skeptical toward the agreement, takes over the presidency of the Mercosur bloc from current holder Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-deal countries, including Germany, Sweden and Spain, argue that France\u2019s concerns have already been accommodated, pointing to proposed additional safeguards designed to protect European farmers in the event of a surge in Latin American beef or poultry imports.<\/p>\n<p>But with those safeguards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/parliament-pushes-for-tougher-triggers-on-mercosur-safeguards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">still not finalized<\/a>, France says it still can\u2019t back the deal, wary that it could enrage the country\u2019s politically powerful farming community.<\/p>\n<p>Brussels also announced this month it was <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/209831\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">planning to strengthen<\/a> its border controls on food, animal and plant imports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese advances are still incomplete and must be finalized and implemented in an operational, robust and effective manner in order to produce and appreciate their full effects,\u201d Lecornu\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GettyImages-2244824591-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7657203\"  \/>Denmark, which holds the presidency of the Council of the EU, has vowed to hold the vote in time for European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to fly to Brazil on Dec. 20 to sign the deal. | Wagner Meier\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Despite Denmark\u2019s resolve to hold the vote in time, final talks among EU member countries may not be wrapped up before a summit of European leaders on Thursday and Friday this week.
