{"id":447750,"date":"2025-12-15T02:47:36","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T02:47:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/447750\/"},"modified":"2025-12-15T02:47:36","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T02:47:36","slug":"jacksonville-beach-pushing-fdot-to-move-forward-on-roundabout-other-road-project-104-5-wokv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/447750\/","title":{"rendered":"Jacksonville Beach pushing FDOT to move forward on roundabout, other road project \u2013 104.5 WOKV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. \u2014 The Jacksonville Beach City Council is asking the Florida Department of Transportation<b> <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/jacksonvillebeachfl.portal.civicclerk.com\/event\/1190\/files\/attachment\/5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/jacksonvillebeachfl.portal.civicclerk.com\/event\/1190\/files\/attachment\/5864\"><b>to prioritize a set of safety projects<\/b><\/a> between two busy roads, one of which would include adding a roundabout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">The city is asking for the roundabout as one option to make Marsh Landing Parkway safer for drivers, particularly those coming off the ramp from John Turner Butler Boulevard, also known as State Road 202. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>&gt;&gt;&gt; STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">The Jacksonville Beach Police Department has reported more than 120 crashes at the intersection since 2014 and said that 34 of those crashes happened in the last five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">The city\u2019s police chief described that number of crashes as \u201ccrazy high\u201d during the city council\u2019s briefing on Monday evening. Most city council members agreed that they want FDOT to make the roundabout project a priority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">\u201cFor safety purposes, with the amount of crash data, something\u2019s going to happen here,\u201d Dennis Barron, the city\u2019s director of public works, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\"><b>READ: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/news\/local\/u2c-navi-hit-another-snag-jta-files-suit-against-local-union\/5PYVZMNHKJGS3JGHH3DABPTNYA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/news\/local\/u2c-navi-hit-another-snag-jta-files-suit-against-local-union\/5PYVZMNHKJGS3JGHH3DABPTNYA\/\"><b>U2C, NAVI hit another snag as Jacksonville Transportation Authority files suit against local union<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tdaappsprod.dot.state.fl.us\/fto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/tdaappsprod.dot.state.fl.us\/fto\/\"><b>FDOT\u2019s daily traffic numbers<\/b><\/a>, the most recent of which were published in 2024, show an increase of daily traffic on Marsh Landing Parkway from 10,500 cars in 2020 to 12,500 in 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">Along with the number of crashes, the increase in traffic is a cause for concern for the city that something needs to be done to make the road safer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">\u201cWe would like to support this for our community,\u201d Barron said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">Jacksonville Beach City Council also wants FDOT to make changes along A1A (3rd Street), particularly through adding more crosswalks for pedestrians, more traffic lights at crosswalks and wider sidewalks. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\"><b>READ: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/news\/local\/city-leaders-look-make-changes-parking-prices-beaches-town-center\/D4X6UT2F2JDDFPWHZCUKHBM4UE\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/news\/local\/city-leaders-look-make-changes-parking-prices-beaches-town-center\/D4X6UT2F2JDDFPWHZCUKHBM4UE\/\"><b>City leaders look to make changes to parking prices at the Beaches Town Center<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">Specifically, the city wants FDOT to amend its original plans for the road to add another traffic light at the intersection of 5th Avenue South rather than 3rd Avenue South, which is one block away from another traffic light.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s enough crosswalks, particularly on A1A,\u201d Charles Heartsill, a driver who spoke with Action News Jax about the possible road changes, said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">Heartsill said he\u2019s lived on the Southside for more than 30 years and believes the roads have only become riskier, particularly for pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s tough on pedestrians, it\u2019s bad enough for drivers. There\u2019s a lot of traffic,\u201d Heartsill said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\"><b>[DOWNLOAD: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/mobile-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks<\/b><\/a><b>]<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">Heartsill believes the roundabout would make it easier to get to and from the Marsh Landing shopping centers, and hopes that the added safety measures on A1A are able to happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">City council didn\u2019t say which of the two projects would be higher on its own priority list, but it believes both need to be done as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s going to be something that has to happen here, this is going to be a big topic,\u201d Barron said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\"><b>[SIGN UP: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/membercenter.actionnewsjax.com\/newsletters\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter<\/b><\/a><b>] <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">FDOT provided this statement to Action News Jax in response to the city\u2019s comments regarding the two projects:<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">\u201cFDOT works closely with local governments to ensure transportation decisions reflect community priorities. Collaboration with local agencies is a core part of our planning process, and we value the feedback we receive. The Department will continue to support the local agency\u2019s efforts as part of our ongoing commitment to partnership and local decision-making.
