In the year 2030\u200a\u2014\u200aPhiladelphia will have two professional basketball teams. The WNBA announced this week that they will be adding<\/a> a franchise to Philadelphia in five years. That year will also mark seventy-five years since the Syracuse Nationals lone<\/a> NBA Championship<\/a>. Eight years later they moved to Philadelphia and became the 76ers<\/a>.<\/p>\n Imagine this. In the only season that an NFL franchise played it\u2019s first game internationally<\/a>\u200a\u2014\u200athat is the only year that an NFL team played in South America and then went on to win a Super Bowl<\/a>\u200a\u2014\u200athat team is the Eagles. It actually shouldn\u2019t take that much imagination.\u00a0<\/p>\n You shouldn\u2019t be surprised. Philly is that greatest football town not in th e US\u2014 but in the <\/strong>world<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n It\u2019s hard to say exactly why Eagle\u2019s founder Bert Bell didn\u2019t favor the Frankford Yellow Jackets. It could be because his own aspiring Philadelphia team\u200a\u2014\u200athe Quaker City Union\u200a\u2014\u200ahelped to claim the City Championship<\/a> in 1921 by defeating Frankford 7\u20130. But thanks in part to Philadelphia\u2019s Blue Laws\u200a\u2014\u200athe Quakers did not pursue an NFL franchise<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n The Frankford Yellow Jackets didn\u2019t obtain an NFL franchise only by being persistence in applying\u200a\u2014\u200abut by a simple formula<\/a>. They didn\u2019t just play other teams\u200a\u2014\u200athey annihilated them. When finally\u200a\u2014\u200ain 1924 their wish was granted and the Yellow Jackets represented Philadelphia in the NFL\u200a\u2014\u200athe result was much the same. Finally\u200a\u2014\u200ain 1926\u200a\u2014\u200athey won an NFL Championship<\/a>.<\/p>\n But the Great Depression left the Yellow Jackets underfunded\u200a\u2014\u200anot just for their team but also their facilities<\/a>. When Bert Bell acquired the rights to the team in 1933\u200a\u2014\u200ahe had no intention<\/a> of reviving the team that he chose not to join at the tail end of his playing career. Instead\u200a\u2014\u200ahe replaced them with the Philadelphia Eagles.<\/p>\n The 76ers abandonment of previous 76 Place plans shows that a Center City location for a Philadelphia Sports Team<\/a> rather than a relegation to South Philadelphia isn\u2019t just feasible\u200a\u2014\u200ait\u2019s possible. An immediate draw for visitors- but also an easy destination for anyone coming into the city\u200a\u2014\u200awithout adding to the congestion in South Philadelphia<\/a>.
