County jail on suspicion of murder, hours after Reiner and his wife were found dead inside their Brentwood home.<\/p>\n<p>Nick cycled in and out of rehab centers and experienced bouts of homelessness as a teenager.<\/p>\n<p>He had gotten clean by 2015, when he worked with his father on \u201cBeing Charlie,\u201d a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/movies\/moviesnow\/la-et-mn-rob-reiner-nick-romy-toronto-drug-addiction-20150915-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">semi-autobiographical film<\/a> about addiction and recovery. Rob Reiner directed and Nick co-wrote the film about a successful actor with political ambitions and a son addicted to drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Many aspects of the movie were inspired by Nick\u2019s relationship with his father \u2014 including a line where the father character tells his son, \u201cI\u2019d rather you hate me and you be alive.\u201d Nick said in a 2016 <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v8AdLnRM2NI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview with AOL<\/a> that he \u201cdidn\u2019t bond a lot\u201d with his father while he was growing up.<\/p>\n<p>Nick gave an interview about \u201cBeing Charlie\u201d alongside his family at the Toronto Film Festival in 2015, saying that his decision to quit heroin was driven by a practical realization.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got sick of doing that,\u201d he told The Times. \u201cI come from a nice family. I\u2019m not supposed to be out there on the streets and in homeless shelters doing all these &#8230; things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the interview, Rob said he regretted valuing the advice of counselors over the voice of his son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Nick would tell us that it wasn\u2019t working for him, we wouldn\u2019t listen,\u201d he said. \u201cWe were desperate, and because the people had diplomas on their wall, we listened to them when we should have been listening to our son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michele added: \u201cWe were so influenced by these people. They would tell us he\u2019s a liar, that he was trying to manipulate us. And we believed them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nick talked about the many different rehab centers and programs he tried without success. In 2016, he told <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/celebrity\/nick-reiner-rob-reiners-son-opens-up-about-drug-addiction-living-on-streets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">People magazine<\/a> that he lived on the streets because he refused to go to the rehab facilities his parents recommended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I wanted to do it my way and not go to the programs they were suggesting, then I had to be homeless,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He told the magazine that he could have died on the streets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all luck,\u201d he said. \u201cYou roll the dice and you hope you make it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the premiere, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/movies\/moviesnow\/la-et-mn-rob-reiner-nick-romy-toronto-drug-addiction-20150915-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Times reported that<\/a> Rob Reiner and his wife at their worst moments \u201cwondered if there was an end in sight, and whether it would be the tragic one that a voice in the back of their heads kept telling them was coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rob Reiner said the filming brought up tough memories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very, very hard going through it the first time, with these painful and difficult highs and lows,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd then making the movie dredged it all up again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he said the process of making the movie was therapeutic, allowing them to work through a lot of past trauma and develop a closer relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Police have released few details about the killing of Rob and Michele Reiner.<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"An officer stretches yellow crime-scene tape near a white picket fence.\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765821194_922_\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Law enforcement near the home of Rob Reiner in Brentwood.<\/p>\n<p>(Eric Thayer \/ Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<p>The couple was found at the home in the 200 block of Chadbourne Avenue on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Early in his career, Rob Reiner played Michael \u201cMeathead\u201d Stivic on the  sitcom \u201cAll in the Family\u201d from 1971 to 1979, alongside Carroll O\u2019Connor as Archie Bunker.<\/p>\n<p>As a director, Reiner helmed a string of hits including \u201cWhen Harry Met Sally&#8230;,\u201d \u201cThe Princess Bride\u201d and \u201cThis Is Spinal Tap.\u201d His work took a dramatic turn when he directed \u201cStand by Me\u201d in  1986, the adaptation of a Stephen King novella. <\/p>\n<p>In interviews, Nick praised his parents for helping him find sobriety but also said he was trying to forge his own life.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2016\/04\/30\/476074400\/rob-and-nick-reiner-say-being-charlie-is-drawn-from-our-lives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR asked them<\/a> whether they\u2019d want to work together again after \u201cBeing  Charlie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think for now, it\u2019s best for me at least to be sort of independent. But that\u2019s not to say I didn\u2019t have an amazing experience,\u201d Nick said. (Based on  IMDb, he did not have any other movie roles.)<\/p>\n<p>Rob added: \u201cHe was the heart and soul of the film and any time I would get an opportunity to work with him I would do it, but I do understand him wanting to forge his own way.
