{"id":449138,"date":"2025-12-15T17:55:20","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T17:55:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/449138\/"},"modified":"2025-12-15T17:55:20","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T17:55:20","slug":"boise-states-spencer-danielson-defends-embattled-quarterback-after-la-bowl-dud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/449138\/","title":{"rendered":"Boise State\u2019s Spencer Danielson defends embattled quarterback after LA Bowl dud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5v\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/boise-state\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boise State<\/a> experienced a multitude of issues in all three phases en route to a disappointing 9-5 overall record during the 2025 college football season.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5y\">Quarterback play was a glaring problem in each of the five losses as the Broncos scored a combined 38 points in double-digit defeats to South Florida, Notre Dame, Fresno State, San Diego State and Washington in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/boise-state\/football\/what-went-wrong-for-boise-state-in-la-bowl-loss-to-washington\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last weekend\u2019s LA Bowl<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"61\">Maddux Madsen started at quarterback in four of the five losses and went 55 of 103 (54 percent) passing for 487 yards with one touchdown and six interceptions. The junior didn\u2019t finish two of the games \u2014 including the LA Bowl \u2014 due to injury.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"64\">Backup Max Cutforth performed a bit better in Boise State\u2019s losses, completing 43 of 67 (64 percent) passes for 443 yards with two touchdowns and five picks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"67\">Madsen tossed two ghastly interceptions in the first half of the LA Bowl and had a career-worst four picks at Notre Dame. In his five career appearances against Power Four teams, Madsen has two passing touchdowns and nine interceptions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6a\">After the Notre Dame game, Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson launched a vigorous defense of his embattled quarterback.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6d\">\u201cHowever a game goes, the first finger gets pointed at the head coach \u2014 as it should \u2014 and then usually people try to nitpick the starting quarterback,\u201d Danielson said back in October. \u201cI don\u2019t care where you\u2019re at, who you are, that\u2019s football in general.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6g\">\u201cMaddux Madsen is a warrior. I will go to war with Maddux Madsen any day of the week. There\u2019s not a quarterback in the country that I would like to be the quarterback of our team (more) than Maddux Madsen. Period, end of story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6j\">The ultimate underdog, Madsen was rated the No. 31 overall prospect in Utah and the No. 106 quarterback prospect nationally in the 247Sports class of 2022 composite rankings. His only other scholarship offer coming out of American Fork High School was from New Mexico.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6m\">Madsen made one start as a redshirt freshman in 2023 and beat out highly-touted transfer Malachi Nelson for the starting job last season. The Broncos went on to finish 12-2 overall and reach the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6p\">After missing the final three games of the 2025 regular season with an unspecified lower leg injury, Madsen returned for the Mountain West championship game and torched UNLV for four total touchdowns. The Broncos cruised to a 38-21 victory, claiming their third straight MWC title.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6s\">The good vibes faded quickly as Madsen finished the LA Bowl 7 of 16 passing for 51 yards with two picks. He watched the second half from the sideline with a boot on his right foot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6v\">As the Broncos prepare to join the Pac-12 next summer, Danielson said he is content with a quarterback room featuring Madsen, Cutforth, walk-on Zeke Martinez and incoming freshmen Cash Herrera and Jackson Taylor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6y\">\u201c(Madsen) is our quarterback,\u201d Danielson said after the LA Bowl. During the ABC telecast of the LA Bowl, announcer Dave Pasch said Danielson will be officiating Madsen\u2019s wedding in March.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"71\">\u201cI think the easy answer is always \u2018Well, you should go to the portal.\u2019 No. I believe in our quarterbacks.
