{"id":450399,"date":"2025-12-16T06:55:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T06:55:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/450399\/"},"modified":"2025-12-16T06:55:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T06:55:13","slug":"snow-and-ice-in-philly-stick-around-as-weather-stays-cold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/450399\/","title":{"rendered":"Snow and ice in Philly stick around as weather stays cold"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">What have become the glacial remnants of a picturesque and a meteorologically unusual snowfall that tufted the trees and bushes with a cottony whiteness are likely to stay around for a few more days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In what has been quite a chilly December, with not a single day of above-normal temperatures, readings were due to tumble into the teens for the second consecutive morning on Tuesday and not make it out of freezing in the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">But if you\u2019re getting tired of salting and chipping ice after <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/snow-philly-total-forecast-jersey-cold-20251214.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/snow-philly-total-forecast-jersey-cold-20251214.html\">those overnight freeze-ups,<\/a> you\u2019re about to get some help. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">A warm-up is forecast to get underway Wednesday, and come Thursday, which is slated to be the warmest day since before Thanksgiving, the atmosphere is expected to train its snow-removal guns on the region. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Forecasters see a surge of snow-erasing warmth <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/new-jersey\/new-jersey-drought-climate-change-20251209.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/new-jersey\/new-jersey-drought-climate-change-20251209.html\">and a significant \u2014 and badly needed \u2014 rainfall <\/a>Thursday night that should restore the landscape to a condition more familiar to Philadelphians and ease precipitation deficits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">As for the prospects of a winter-wonderland encore, nothing is on the horizon in the near term, said Nick Guzzo, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Said Matt Benz, senior meteorologist with AccuWeather Inc, \u201cFor folks looking for more snow, this might have been it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">At least for now and perhaps until after Christmas, or later. But, \u201cWinter\u2019s not done yet,\u201d Benz said.<\/p>\n<p>The warmup in Philly is expected to be brief<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Temperatures could go as high as 55 degrees Thursday, Benz said. Then after a cold front passes through, temperatures will fall during the day Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">This won\u2019t be an Arctic front like the one that gave Philly its coldest day of the season on Monday, with a high of 28. However, the forecasts call for readings to be no higher than the 30s on Saturday, and mid-40s on Sunday, which is close to the longer-term normal high, followed by several degrees chillier on Monday. <\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s expected for the next two weeks<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In its updated extended outlooks on Monday, NOAA\u2019s Climate Prediction Center had just about the entire country with above-normal temperatures through Dec. 29, with a notable exception \u2014 the Northeast, including Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Predicted upper-air conditions in the Arctic and the North Atlantic would argue against above-normal temperatures around here during the period, climate center forecaster Thomas Collow said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The center wisely eschews <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/weather\/winter-weather-forecast-snow-philadelphia-20251016.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/weather\/winter-weather-forecast-snow-philadelphia-20251016.html\">the snow-forecasting business.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Philly just had quite the unusual snow event<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Regardless of what happens the rest of the way, the winter of 2025-26 will be snowier than at least seven others in the period of snow records that date to the winter of 1884-85.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The 4.2 inches measured officially at <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/philadelphia-airport\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia International Airport<\/a> Sunday is a half-inch above the long-term average for the season to date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\"><b>\u00bb READ MORE: <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/weather\/snow-how-much-philadelphia-weather-20251215.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\">How much snow fell near you, mapped<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Granted almost any substantial snowfall would seem exceptional these days around here, but this one truly was, said the weather service\u2019s Zach Cooper, a meteorologist in the Mount Holly office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Most of Philly\u2019s significant snows are the result of coastal storms that mine moist air from the ocean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">That wasn\u2019t the case Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201dIn some ways it was a bit of a unique situation for us, especially to get the amounts that we did,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The snow was generated by a weak \u201cclipper system,\u201d a storm that dives out of southwestern Canada and usually has minor impacts around here, and a disturbance in the upper atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"><a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/weather\/snow-how-much-philadelphia-weather-20251215.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/weather\/snow-how-much-philadelphia-weather-20251215.html\">Totals generally ranged from 4 to 8 inches<\/a> across the region. Totals were less around the city in part because temperatures took their good, old time dropping below freezing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Marginal temperatures also were a factor in the spread of accumulations.
