(Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Late on Monday night, an article appeared on well-known Russian disinformation site Pravda, which claims to be a world news website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The article contained an AI-generated image of Mr Ostrovsky having his face painted red alongside a screenshot of the inaccurate result of an AI detector, which claimed the image was &#8220;100 per cent human&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The article claimed Mr Ostrovsky was part of &#8220;Mossad propaganda&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The image was created by Google&#8217;s artificial intelligence, which ABC NEWS Verify confirmed by testing it in the company&#8217;s Synth ID detector tool, which checks for the company&#8217;s invisible digital watermark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Visual analysis of the image also reveals it is a fake.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An AI generated image of a man getting his face painted with red paint to mimic blood\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/b4576b55fc21a43aed585c2c1e879ab7\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">An AI-generated image appears to show Arsen Ostrovsky having his face painted. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The writing on the T-shirt in the image, for example, is unreadable, and does not match the original image.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The &#8220;film set&#8221; in the background of the deepfake image appears off, with tripod legs crisscrossing and seeming to hover just above the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a larger, non-cropped version of the image that appeared elsewhere on the internet, there are two cars in the background that appear to morph into each other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Ostrovsky also appeared on a Channel Nine live stream after having his head bandaged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He is wearing shorts in the live stream, rather than the pants present in the deepfake, and the blood on his shirt also does not match.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In the hours since the attack, Mr Ostrovsky has posted a photo of himself in a hospital gown as he recovers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A look at Pravda&#8217;s domain history shows it is registered in Russia and has a history of spreading pro-Russian propaganda.<\/p>\n<p>The invention of &#8216;Edward Crabtree&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The world has shared the story of Ahmed Al Ahmed, the tobacconist who wrestled the long-barrelled gun from terrorist Sajid Akram&#8217;s arms.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The man comes from behind in a bear hug\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/34ffb98e2db00ce5e15ee26db1b398b4\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ahmed Al Ahmed tackled one of the gunmen during the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But early on, while Mr Ahmed was in hospital undergoing operations for gunshot wounds, claims began to circulate on social media attributing his heroism to a man called &#8220;Edward Crabtree&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Racist and Islamophobic posts on X, which were seen by hundreds of thousands of people, claimed Mr Ahmed was not Middle Eastern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Some of the posts referencing Edward Crabtree screenshotted a &#8220;news&#8221;
