{"id":452094,"date":"2025-12-17T00:57:19","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T00:57:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/452094\/"},"modified":"2025-12-17T00:57:19","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T00:57:19","slug":"edmonton-parts-of-alberta-warned-30-cm-of-snow-possible-on-wednesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/452094\/","title":{"rendered":"Edmonton, parts of Alberta warned 30 cm of snow possible on Wednesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Get the shovels ready \u2014 parts of Alberta are set to be pummeled by a dump of snow and high winds will produce blizzard-like conditions in some rural areas.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/snowfall-warning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Snowfall<\/a>, winter storm and blowing snow warnings have been issued for several areas of Alberta.<\/p>\n<p>In the Edmonton region, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/environment-canada\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Environment Canada<\/a> said heavy snow \u2014 between 15 to 30 cm \u2014 is forecast to fall by Wednesday evening. That\u2019s an increase from the 10 to 20 cm the weather agency predicted earlier.<\/p>\n<p>A heavy band of snow will develop Wednesday morning, stretching from the northwest into central Alberta.<\/p>\n<p>Snow will fall heavy at times with rapid accumulation expected, the national weather agency said.<\/p>\n<p>The snowfall warning included, as of Tuesday afternoon, the City of Edmonton and the surrounding Parkland, Sturgeon and Leduc counties, along with communities like Pigeon Lake, Calmar, Morinville, Sherwood Park. St. Albert, Wabamun, Bon Accord and Gibbons.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in Edmonton and Global News weather specialist Phil Darlington said the snow will likely affect many people\u2019s drive both to and from work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are expecting snow to start Wednesday morning in the Edmonton area. That means it will be falling for your morning commute,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The snow will ease up as the weather system moves from northwest to southeast throughout the day, with heavy snow ending in the Edmonton area Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-blockquote l-article__blockquote\">\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cIt is set to taper off later in the day \u2014 around the time of your evening commute.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Darlington said a few more centimetres of the white stuff could fall on Thursday and into Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p>After that, the cold returns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing this round of snow temperatures are expected to drop once again. The weekend and the start of next week are set to see highs in the -20s,\u201d Darlington said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-blockquote l-article__blockquote\">\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cSo it looks like we will have a white Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Roads and walkways may be very difficult to navigate as the snow builds up on Wednesday and Environment Canada said people should be prepared for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tCity of Edmonton declares Phase 1 parking ban<\/p>\n<p>Because of the incoming heavy snow, plus the white stuff already on the ground, the City of Edmonton has declared a citywide Phase 1 parking ban to take effect Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>The ban for arterial roads, collector roads, bus routes, and roads within business improvement areas starts Dec. 17 at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to the current accumulation and the additional snowfall we expect to receive on Wednesday, a Phase 1 parking ban is necessary for keeping roadways safe,\u201d said Val Dacyk, general supervisor of infrastructure field operations with the city\u2019s parks and roads services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo facilitate the clearing by our plows and graders, it is imperative that these routes remain unobstructed by parked vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crews will be actively clearing roads 24 hours a day and the city anticipates the parking ban to be in effect for three to five days.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'City of Edmonton reviews parking ban enforcement'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/6P_PARKING_BAN_ENFORCEM.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2:00<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCity of Edmonton reviews parking ban enforcement\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>During the Phase 1 parking ban, parking is prohibited on arterial roads, collector roads, bus routes and roads within business improvement at all hours until the clearing is complete.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>EPark zones are not active during Phase 1 of the parking ban while these areas are cleared. These roads include those marked with white \u201cSeasonal No Parking\u201d signs.<\/p>\n<p>Vehicles parked on Phase 1 parking ban roadways may be ticketed $250 and\/or towed. These roads include downtown hills, arterial roads, collector roads and bus routes.<\/p>\n<p>The city will issue an update when the Phase 1 ban is lifted.\u00a0 If the city determines that a Phase 2 parking ban for residential and industrial roads is necessary, it will issue another announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Drivers are allowed to park on roads once their snow removal has been completed, as long as parking is allowed there normally.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Canada<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Residents can check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/gis.edmonton.ca\/portal\/apps\/experiencebuilder\/experience\/?appalias=SnowAndIceControl&amp;id=2a42dc8809704d618e3e1bcd97500887\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Roadways Snow Clearing Map<\/a> for current clearing status of roadways or sign up to receive free email or text notifications for up to five locations.<\/p>\n<p>Blizzard-like conditions, freezing rain outside Edmonton<\/p>\n<p>Outside of Edmonton, there will be even more snow and wind that could lead to road closures.<\/p>\n<p>A winter storm warning was issued in\u00a0and around places like Fort Saskatchewan, Strathcona County and Leduc County.<\/p>\n<p>Environment Canada said very poor visibility and blowing snow is likely as heavy snow, with total amounts of 15 to 25 cm, and strong, gusty winds are expected to the south and east on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The heaviest snowfall is likely between Highway 16, east of Edmonton, and Highway 12, east of Red Deer. Local snowfall amounts of 30 cm is possible.<\/p>\n<p>Blizzard conditions are also likely to develop in areas nearest the Saskatchewan border, Environment Canada said, particularly between Highway 14 and Highway 9 from Wainwright to Oyen.<\/p>\n<p>Wind gusts of up to 90 km\/h in conjunction with falling and blowing snow will reduce visibility to near zero in those areas of eastern Alberta.<\/p>\n<p>Further south, freezing rain is likely for several hours near Highway 9, east of Drumheller to the Saskatchewan border which the national weather agency said will transition to snow and blowing snow by the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>A sharp drop in temperature is also likely to occur \u2014 as much as 15 degrees in three hours.<\/p>\n<p>For areas between Highway 1 and Highway 9, any remaining slush or ponding water is likely to freeze as temperatures drop rapidly on Wednesday afternoon and evening.<\/p>\n<p>Travel will likely be challenging and road closures are possible.<\/p>\n<p>QEII, Trans-Canada travel info<\/p>\n<p>Travel on Alberta\u2019s two biggest highways will likely be impacted by the weather system, Environment Canada said, and blowing snow advisories were issued.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Accumulating snow combined with gusty winds from the north will reduce visibility on the QEII, beginning on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Environment Canada said said the Highway 2 corridor between Calgary and Red Deer, as well as the Highway 1 corridor east of Calgary are most likely to be impacted.<\/p>\n<p>Conditions will improve on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>Highway 93 could get 50 cm of show<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, parts of the mountain parks are forecasted to get half a metre of snow.<\/p>\n<p>Environment Canada said multiple rounds of heavy snow will bring up to 50 cm to parts of the Highway 93 Icefields Parkway by Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Conditions will be highly variable and travel will be challenging. Road closures are possible.<\/p>\n<p>New weather alert system<\/p>\n<p>Last month,\u00a0Environment and Climate Change Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11543316\/canada-new-alert-system-extreme-weather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">launched a new colour-coded system<\/a> to make it easier to understand the severity of extreme weather and any risks that people might need to know about.<\/p>\n<p>Each type of weather alert now includes a colour \u2014 yellow, orange or red \u2014 to show the seriousness of the weather event.<\/p>\n<p>This snowfall warning is a yellow alert, which is the most common.
