{"id":452960,"date":"2025-12-17T09:55:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T09:55:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/452960\/"},"modified":"2025-12-17T09:55:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T09:55:13","slug":"yo-la-tengo-honors-rob-reiner-with-spinal-tap-cover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/452960\/","title":{"rendered":"Yo La Tengo honors Rob Reiner with Spinal Tap cover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They turned it up to 11 in his honor.<\/p>\n<p>The indie rock band Yo La Tengo paid tribute to the late Rob Reiner by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=e9juCiAqA1o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">playing a blasting Spinal Tap cover<\/a> during their annual Hanukkah show at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs if that wasn\u2019t ragged enough, this will be the most ragged one of all,\u201d frontman Ira Kaplan, 70, told the crowd after the group finished a cover of the Velvet Underground\u2019s \u201cHeroin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beloved director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were stabbed to death at their home Sunday. Chad Sclove\/YouTube<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we\u2019re gonna salute a Jewish songwriter we were not expecting to be saluting this Hanukkah, and we certainly weren\u2019t expecting to be memorializing him,\u201d he continued. \u201cSo we\u2019re gonna try to do a song and see how this goes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yo La Tengo then launched into a lively rendition of \u201cGimme Some Money,\u201d a tune made famous by <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/15\/entertainment\/how-rob-reiner-shot-to-fame-with-all-in-the-family-and-then-churned-out-hollywood-hits\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the fictional heavy metal rockers<\/a> in Reiner\u2019s 1984 hit mockumentary \u201cThis Is Spinal Tap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The film, which marked Reiner\u2019s directorial debut, starred Christopher Guest as Nigel Tufnel, Michael McKean as David St. Hubbins, Harry Shearer as Derek Smalls and Reiner as documentary filmmaker Marty DiBergi.<\/p>\n<p>Reiner as Marty DiBergi in his 1984 mockumentary \u201cThis Is Spinal Tap.\u201d \u00a9Embassy Pictures\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/p>\n<p>Reiner and Christopher Guest in \u201cThis Is Spinal Tap.\u201d \u00a9EMBASSY PICTURES<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, it started out actually slow,\u201d the \u201cPrincess Bride\u201d director\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2025\/07\/04\/entertainment\/this-is-spinal-tap-director-rob-reiner-reflects-on-cult-classics-success-41-years-later\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told Page Six<\/a>\u00a0regarding \u201cThis Is Spinal Tap\u201d in July. \u201cPeople didn\u2019t quite get it at first. They thought it was a real documentary about a real band.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reiner\u2019s final film before his shocking murder was a follow-up to the classic mockumentary titled \u201cSpinal Tap II: The End Continues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Released in September, the sequel brought the beloved director back together with Guest, McKean and Shearer as the fictional band prepared for a one-night-only reunion concert in New Orleans. <\/p>\n<p>Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Guest in \u201cThis Is Spinal Tap.\u201d \u00a9Embassy Pictures\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/p>\n<p>McKean, Shearer and Guest talk to Reiner in \u201cSpinal Tap II: The End Continues.\u201d Courtesy Everett Collection<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpinal Tap II: The End Continues\u201d even featured some cameos from real-life music superstars like Paul McCartney and Elton John.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were asked many times to do [a sequel], especially after the movie was put in the\u00a0National Film Registry of the Library of Congress\u00a0and the Oxford English Dictionary put in \u2018goes to 11,&#8217;\u201d Reiner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/movies\/2025\/12\/15\/rob-reiner-spinal-tap-movie-final-interview\/87778420007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told USA Today<\/a> three months before his tragic death. \u201cBut for the most part, we thought we were done with it all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fun thing for me was falling back with old friends,\u201d he continued. \u201cYou just start doing your thing with each other, [Guest] used to call it \u2018schneedeling,\u2019 and right away, we were schneedeling as if no time had gone by. He was funny, he was smart, he was a mensch,\u201d the \u201cSimpsons\u201d star told Page Six on Monday. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a great collaborator, and when the four of us proposed ideas for the films, he was the one who wrote them on 3\u00d75 cards and organized them into a movie,\u201d Shearer added.<\/p>\n<p>Reiner, 78, and his wife, 70, were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2025\/12\/14\/celebrity-news\/two-found-dead-at-director-rob-reiners-home-confirmed-by-los-angeles-police\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found stabbed to death<\/a>\u00a0at their home in Brentwood, California, on Sunday afternoon by their 28-year-old daughter, Romy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_12-0\">Nick Reiner, the couple\u2019s son, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2025\/12\/15\/celebrity-news\/see-the-dramatic-moment-rob-reiners-son-nick-was-arrested-for-parents-murder\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">taken into custody that night<\/a>\u00a0and booked on suspicion of murdering his parents. <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_12-0\">The Los Angeles Police Department said in a Monday press release that the 32-year-old was being held without bail. <\/p>\n<p>Rob, Michele, Romy, Nick and Jake Reiner with Maria Gilfillan at the premiere of \u201cSpinal Tap II: The End Continues\u201d in Los Angeles on Sept. 9, 2025.
