While markets expected an extension ahead of the July 9 end to the tariff reprieve, administration officials signaled only a few weeks\u2019 worth, saying Sunday that duties will return back to their \u201cLiberation Day\u201d levels on Aug. 1, unless countries reach trade deals with the U.S.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>U.S. stock futures dropped on Sunday evening as investors weighed more high-stakes drama on tariffs in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>A new deadline is emerging as President Donald Trump\u2019s 90-day pause on his reciprocal tariffs is about to expire on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>While markets expected an extension ahead of the July 9 end to the tariff reprieve, administration officials signaled there will be just a few weeks\u2019 worth, saying Sunday that duties will return back to their \u201cLiberation Day\u201d levels on Aug. 1, unless countries reach trade deals with the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Unless trading partners reach deals with the U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said rates will <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/06\/us-tariffs-liberation-day-levels-aug-1-deadline-extension-trump-trade-war-deals-bessent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/06\/us-tariffs-liberation-day-levels-aug-1-deadline-extension-trump-trade-war-deals-bessent\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/06\/us-tariffs-liberation-day-levels-aug-1-deadline-extension-trump-trade-war-deals-bessent\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">\u201cboomerang back\u201d to the April 2 levels<\/a>, which triggered an epic stock crash that reversed when Trump announced the 90-day pause to allow for negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the tariffs will go into effect Aug. 1 \u201cbut the president is setting the rates and the deals right now.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Futures tied to the\u00a0Dow\u00a0Jones Industrial Average dropped 120 points, or 0.27%. S&amp;P 500 futures were down 0.41%, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/nasdaq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/nasdaq\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">Nasdaq<\/a>\u00a0futures fell 0.50%.<\/p>\n<p>That indicates a less bearish start to the trading week compared to Friday, when futures showed steeper declines after Trump said Thursday that would <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/04\/stock-market-today-dow-futures-trump-tariffs-deadline-70-percent-letters\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/04\/stock-market-today-dow-futures-trump-tariffs-deadline-70-percent-letters\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/04\/stock-market-today-dow-futures-trump-tariffs-deadline-70-percent-letters\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\" rel=\"noopener\">start sending out letters<\/a> setting tariffs as high as 70%.<\/p>\n<p>The yield on the 10-year Treasury edged down 1 basis point to 4.33%.
