Some bought one or two tickets, while others purchased as many as 50.<\/p>\n \u201cA billion \u2014 everybody is buying at least one,\u201d said Mark Anthony Espinosa, manager of a Phoenix Shell station. \u201cYou get guys who routinely buy maybe 10 times more, especially when it\u2019s over $1 billion.\u201d<\/p>\n The jackpot has grown so large that digital monitors displaying the prize amount max out at $999 million and cannot show the full $1.25 billion total.<\/p>\n Many customers said they don\u2019t normally play the lottery but couldn\u2019t resist the chance to win more than a billion dollars just before Christmas.<\/p>\n \u201cOnly playing because the jackpot is so high,\u201d said Terese Carnahan, who bought tickets Wednesday.<\/p>\n Robert Casey said he hasn\u2019t played Powerball in more than five years. \u201cI just figured, what the heck,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Players dream of big payoffs despite long odds<\/p>\n According to Powerball<\/a>, the chances of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292 million. But the long odds haven\u2019t stopped players from imagining what they would do with the money.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019d disappear probably, move to Puerto Rico or something, buy a big house, a bunch of cars, a big garage and all that,\u201d said Andrew Gonzales. \u201cYou\u2019d probably never see me again.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI would pay off my medical bills, my parents\u2019 medical bills, make it so my parents can retire and all that,\u201d said one man.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019d donate a good portion of it and spend the rest on my family and me,\u201d said Helena Gonzales.<\/p>\n Brittney Underwood, who was recently released from prison, said she bought a ticket hoping to win money she needs. \u201cI was just released from the penitentiary about three days ago, so I need some money, so I\u2019m going to purchase Powerball and pray to God that I win,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Wednesday night\u2019s drawing represents the sixth-largest Powerball jackpot in history.
