{"id":455489,"date":"2025-12-18T12:20:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T12:20:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/455489\/"},"modified":"2025-12-18T12:20:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T12:20:16","slug":"meta-pauses-third-party-horizon-vr-headsets-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/455489\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta pauses third-party Horizon VR headsets program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Meta has \u201cpaused\u201d its program to license its VR operating system to other hardware companies so they could build their own headsets using the platform, as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadtovr.com\/meta-horizon-os-third-party-headset-cancelled-asus-lenovo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Road to VR<\/a> .<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">With the program, announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/4\/22\/24137284\/meta-license-horizon-os-quest-headset-lenovo-asus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in April 2024<\/a>, Meta announced that it would be licensing the Quest OS headset \u2014 which, at the same time, it also renamed to Horizon OS \u2014 to hardware makers like Lenovo and Asus. In a blog post at the time, Meta said that the program would give \u201cmore choice to consumers and a larger ecosystem for developers to build for.\u201d CEO Mark Zuckerberg said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/C6EalqUrLa3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a video<\/a> that \u201cour goal is to make it so that the open model defines the next generation of computing, again with the metaverse, glasses, and headsets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">But now, Meta is pausing the program to focus on its first-party offerings instead. \u201cWe have paused the program to focus on building the world-class first-party hardware and software needed to advance the VR market,\u201d Meta spokesperson Johanna Peace says in a statement to The Verge. \u201cWe\u2019re committed to this for the long term and will revisit opportunities for 3rd-party device partnerships as the category evolves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Meta recently delayed the launch of mixed reality glasses codenamed \u201cPhoenix\u201d from the second half of 2026 to the first half of 2027 and is beginning work on a new Quest device, according to internal memos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/meta-delays-new-mixed-reality-glasses-code-named-phoenix-2025-12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported on by Business Insider<\/a>.
