To date, the site\u2019s users and editorial staff have collected and curated articles and photos for over 32,000 such places, ranging from abandoned theme parks to hidden beaches to Japan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/cat-island\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cat Island<\/a>. Atlas Obscura\u2019s community has created over 93 million lists throughout the years, and the company has been releasing books and podcasts to further highlight the obscure and visit-worthy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Of course, many of the listed places are simply out of reach for most people. \u201cThe premise of the company was to make exploration available to everybody,\u201d says Atlas Obscura\u2019s chief content officer, Doug Baldinger. That includes people who can\u2019t afford expensive international travel. When consumer VR first emerged a decade ago, its ability to transport people to faraway places seemed a perfect solution for adventure seekers unable to visit them in person. \u201cWe [wanted] to show people that you can have access to these things wherever you are,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Alas, the tech wasn\u2019t what it was cracked up to be. Aiming for maximum exposure, Atlas Obscura bet on affordable headsets like Samsung\u2019s Gear VR and Meta\u2019s Oculus Go, only to quickly realize that those devices came with massive limitations. Without six degrees of freedom, visiting a place in VR didn\u2019t really feel like being there. Plus, most of those early headsets ended up catching dust, with disillusioned consumers <a href=\"https:\/\/hugo.blog\/2024\/03\/11\/vision-pro\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">giving up on them after a few weeks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cThe delivery platform wasn\u2019t really up to what we wanted to do with it,\u201d recalls Nathan Anderson, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/newcanvas.co\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Canvas<\/a> studio has been helping Atlas Obscura with its immersive media efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Atlas Obscura gave VR another shot last year by re-releasing its app with remastered content <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.com\/experiences\/atlas-obscura-vr\/7211065555655312\/?srsltid=AfmBOooDs0ASY0zLl8Xru4bHFFqeyG5c0hGD-en3GUcRfp2xhZvk19U3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on Meta\u2019s Quest<\/a>, and in recent weeks also brought it to <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1701640&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fplay.google.com%2Fstore%2Fapps%2Fdetails%3Fid%3Dcom.newcanvas.atlasobscura\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Android XR<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1701640&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fstore.steampowered.com%2Fapp%2F4110170%2FAtlas_Obscura_VR%2F\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Steam<\/a>. Now, the company is getting ready to bring immersive experiences to anyone no matter what device they\u2019re using. In early 2026, Atlas Obscura plans to launch a WebXR-based social 3D experience called the Obscura Society.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The Obscura Society will be a virtual lounge that Atlas Obscura community members can visit to hang out with the help of 3D avatars, have voice chats, and explore places from the site\u2019s massive catalog together. Image: Atlas Obscura<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Viverse already hosts over 23,000 3D worlds, but Aslanyan prefers to not call it a metaverse. \u201cWe just generally avoid the word since it has this connotation that it\u2019s one general world,\u201d he says. Instead, spaces like the Obscura Society function as separate 3D web entities, which Aslanyan likens to YouTube player embeds. \u201cWe want to get as close as we can to video consumption,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">New Canvas envisions lounges like the Obscura Society as a new form of third places in the metaverse. Places that aren\u2019t explicitly games, but gathering grounds for like-minded people. \u201cOften, you just want to meet with people and just hang out with them,\u201d Anderson says. Places that can be low-stakes entry points into virtual worlds, while also offering portals to full-blown VR experiences for people who want to go deeper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The Obscura Society is also betting on AI, which allows the bartender to pull nuggets from Atlas Obscura\u2019s vast knowledge base. That\u2019s not without risk: AI is a bit of a point of contention for Atlas Obscura these days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The company behind the site recently faced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakermedia.com\/p\/moguls-at-sun-valley-nyt-mamdani-mess-ai-at-atlas-obscura\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">staff<\/a> and reader pushback over the CEO\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/12\/04\/2025\/staff-cuts-and-strategy-squabbles-split-atlas-obscura-leadership\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plans to integrate AI<\/a> into Atlas Obscura, as well as significant staff reductions. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of sensitivity around it in terms of how we are handling production,\u201d says Baldinger. \u201cWe see it as an
