{"id":456796,"date":"2025-12-19T02:15:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-19T02:15:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/456796\/"},"modified":"2025-12-19T02:15:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T02:15:13","slug":"it-was-awful-north-texas-widow-gets-immigration-approval-months-after-husband-was-killed-in-shooting-at-dallas-ice-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/456796\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;It was awful&#8217;: North Texas widow gets immigration approval months after husband was killed in shooting at Dallas ICE facility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the letter, USCIS approved Miguel Angel Garcia&#8217;s immigration case more than two months after he was killed.<\/p>\n<p>DALLAS \u2014 What should have been a moment of relief instead reopened deep grief for Stephany Gauffeny.<\/p>\n<p>More than two months after her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfaa.com\/article\/news\/local\/dallas-county\/wife-attorneys-of-man-killed-in-dallas-ice-facility-shooting-speak-about-his-final-moments\/287-032d7232-4015-491f-ac5b-e27ebadddc70\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">husband was shot and killed in the sniper attack at a Dallas ICE facility<\/a>, Gauffeny received a letter on Dec. 15 from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services approving his immigration case to obtain legal status in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was like a slap in the face,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The letter, which is dated Dec. 9, is more than two months after her husband, Miguel Angel Garcia, died while in federal custody. According to USCIS&#8217;s letter, it would&#8217;ve granted Garcia the ability to begin applying for a visa or permanent residence, something that would allow him to remain in the U.S. under legal status.<\/p>\n<p>Gaffeny said they spent about five years on the process of obtaining legal status for Garcia.<\/p>\n<p>He had been transferred to ICE custody following a DUI arrest. Garcia was shot while inside a transport van during the attack. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfaa.com\/article\/news\/local\/dallas-ice-shooting-claims-second-victim\/287-1fbe88b3-61ea-4fa0-ba4f-b6c3295bb9e6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Days later, he died in the hospital<\/a> while Gauffeny, who was pregnant at the time, was days away from giving birth to their son.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never got to meet the baby,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Gauffeny said the timing of the letter made the pain even more difficult to process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImagine receiving this right after his passing and before Christmas. It was awful. If he had been here, it would\u2019ve been a happy moment,\u201d she said. \u201cI remember just reading it, and I just broke down crying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She described the last two months as traumatic, especially navigating grief while caring for a newborn and her other children.<\/p>\n<p>Gauffeny launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/aid-for-miguels-medical-and-family-needs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GoFundMe<\/a> to support her family&#8217;s needs following her husband&#8217;s death.<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the heartbreak is learning how Garcia spent his final moments. Gauffeny said another detainee told her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfaa.com\/article\/news\/crime\/dallas-texas-ice-facility-shooting-sniper-police-victims-updates\/287-6a6f7006-3a7c-4358-abae-d6bdc3da0eaa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Garcia shielded him during the attack<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018Get under me.
