The alleged abuse took place inside the couple\u2019s home and was filmed and then shared online without the victim\u2019s knowledge, according to prosecutors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbum4pc0000356pl68hqe63@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The verdict at the Regional Court of Aachen in western Germany comes exactly a year after Frenchman Dominique Pelicot \u2013 who solicited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/interactive\/2024\/12\/europe\/gisele-pelicot-france-case-messages\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dozens of strangers from a chatroom<\/a> for a near 10-year period to rape and abuse his then-wife Gis\u00e8le \u2013 was found guilty of aggravated rape. Forty-nine other men  were all found guilty of rape or sexual assault.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbupsbj000d356p37p2leww@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The case, which unfolded over months in southeast France, shocked the country and brought global attention to the way that France approaches gender-based violence amid a culture of pervasive misogyny. It sparked a cultural reckoning on violence against women that the country is continuing to grapple with.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/sr-1024-683-max3.jpg\" alt=\"Campaigners demand reform of German sexual criminal law at a protest in Berlin on November 25.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbv99fy000g356p7odevim0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Aachen case is the first of its kind to be heard by the German courts, according to the campaign group Nur Ja Heisst Ja, whose name \u2013 translated to \u201cOnly Yes Means Yes\u201d \u2013 highlights its mission to change how rape is legally defined.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbv9k4u000l356p4dbrukm8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last year, Hamburg-based investigative journalists unearthed evidence of a man who, for 14 years, had shared videos on an adult website allegedly showing the drugging and raping of his wife. But that man was never charged; he passed away in 2024.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbvaiou000q356p1mr8nzty@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Aachen case is \u201d very significant,\u201d said Jill S., an activist from Nur Ja Heisst Ja who asked CNN not to use her last name to avoid online abuse, because \u201cIt\u2019s a case that kind of shows where there are gaps in our legal system.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbv9rkq000o356p0fu614zw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Germany, consent has traditionally been defined through the \u201cno means no\u2019\u201d principle, which campaigners say deprives victims of sexual abuse \u2013 particularly those who have been drugged, as is alleged in the Aachen case \u2013 the ability to give explicit consent for sexual acts.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/r-683-1024-max.jpg\" alt=\"The Aachen case is the first of its kind to be heard by the German courts, according to campaign group Ja Heisst Ja are campaigning for the German government to change the definition of rape to include a \u201cyes means yes\u2019\u2019 standard, arguing that the current law still places the burden on victims to verbally resist rape and other sexual violence.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbveqff000w356pgij783gx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Like \u201cany kind of topic around sexual violence, it\u2019s not taken very serious by the government,\u201d Jill S. said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbvfg6y0011356p1a7n5s6o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Aachen case also highlights another key problem, according to the campaigners: The possession of rape content is currently legal in Germany.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/sr-683-1024-max2.jpg\" alt=\"Nur Ja Heisst Ja are campaigning for the possession of rape content to be criminalized in Germany.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1024\" width=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbvf77a000z356pz9vqlqef@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nur Ja Heisst Ja is hopeful that this might soon change, as Kathrin Wahlmann, a justice minister in the state of Lower Saxony, has launched a statewide campaign to have that possession criminalized.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbvfxcd0017356p96u1gko9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Across the border in France, lawmaker Sandrine Josso also believes that laws need to be adapted to protect women from this kind of abuse.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbvgr3d001e356p94crjn8i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Josso, the issue is personal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbvgr3d001f356poajoiyfn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In November 2023, Josso alleges she was drugged by then 66-year-old French senator Jo\u00ebl Guerriau at a party.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbvgk40001c356ps7f2gw2p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She filed a criminal complaint, with a trial beginning in January.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbvhh2b001k356pd3vp6ta3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Guerriau has denied all allegations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbvh21k001i356ptyh7zta7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think that today\u2019s laws are not sufficiently grounded in reality,\u201d Josso told CNN, saying that she believes that current laws do not factor into account how the online world fuels unique eco-systems of abuse.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbvi3oy001p356pscpoof1q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSocial media has enabled it (sexual abuse) because communities form and share tips \u2013 essentially refining and professionalizing their methods.
