DePaul landed a partnership with Spire Motorsports and was featured on Michael McDowell\u2019s No. 71 Chevrolet ZL1.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPartnering with Spire Motorsports for the NASCAR Chicago Street Race allows us to spotlight DePaul on a national stage while embracing a global event in our own backyard,\u201d said DePaul Vice President and Director of Athletics <a href=\"https:\/\/depaulbluedemons.com\/news\/2025\/6\/24\/athletics-depaul-university-and-spire-motorsports-announce-partnership-for-2025-chicago-street-race\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DeWayne Peevy<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s the perfect example of how we\u2019re using sports to elevate our visibility and create real-world learning experiences for our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DePaul went full throttle with a partnership, but McDowell wasn\u2019t able to go full throttle in the race.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-78042 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/AP25187745250038-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"  \/>Drivers race in a NASCAR Cup Series auto race at the Grant Park 165 , Sunday, July 6, 2025, in Chicago. (AP Photo\/Erin Hooley) (Credit: AP)<\/p>\n<p>He started in second place and led each of the opening 31 laps; he passed Shane van Gisbergen \u2014 the winner of the Cup Series \u2014 in the opening corner.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There was an issue with McDowell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nascar.com\/news-media\/2025\/07\/06\/cup-series-michael-mcdowell-mechanical-issues-chicago-street-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">throttle cable<\/a> that sent him to the service lane, and ultimately took him out of the running for the win.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe throttle cable just broke,\u201d McDowell said to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nascar.com\/news-media\/2025\/07\/06\/cup-series-michael-mcdowell-mechanical-issues-chicago-street-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASCAR<\/a> post-race. \u201cI don\u2019t know what caused it or how it got to that spot, but that\u2019s what happened. I feel like we had control of the race the whole race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was behind the pace car, and the throttle stuck wide-open. Luckily, I got to the switches fast enough before I ran into something, and then a cable broke after that. It\u2019s just a shame. We had a great car,\u201d McDowell said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McDowell ended up finishing in 32nd place, 22 laps behind van Gisbergen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEpic weekend for us.
