(Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1926:<\/strong> The Chicago Bears played the Green Bay Packers for the first time at Soldier Field.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"MotAyfQ1xS\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/12\/07\/chicago-bears-green-bay-packers-history-rivalry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers have played 211 times in the past 100 years: How the rivalry has unfolded<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The game ended in <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-bears-fight-green-bay-to\/162117663\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 3-3 tie<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Frank Nitti, who had been shot multiple times, and F.J. (Chicago American)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1932:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2017\/08\/19\/frank-the-enforcer-nitti-1930s-crime-boss-extorted-millions-in-hollywood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frank \u201cThe Enforcer\u201d Nitti<\/a> was shot <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-police-bullets-fell-nitt\/161184022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">but survived<\/a>. But \u2014 Chicago being Chicago \u2014 Nitti was arrested and his assailants were given a medal. (Ray Gora\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1975:<\/strong> Chicago native John Paul Stevens was sworn in as a Supreme Court justice.<\/p>\n<p>Stevens, a judge in the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals since 1970, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-ford-nominates-judge-in\/187041097\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">came as somewhat of a surprise<\/a> as he is relatively unknown outside of Illinois legal circles,\u201d Tribune reporter Glen Elsasser wrote after Stevens\u2019 nomination to the bench was announced. Yet President Gerald Ford told reporters at the White House he believed Stevens \u201cto be the best qualified to serve as an associate justice of the Supreme Court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He served on the court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/07\/17\/former-justice-john-paul-stevens-who-became-supreme-courts-leading-liberal-dies-at-age-99\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for nearly 35 years<\/a> \u2014 more than twice the average tenure for a justice, according to the AP. Stevens died in 2019.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"OzyJ87Kr8u\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/09\/10\/uptown-theatre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Column: Will there be more birthdays for the Uptown Theatre? A new book looks at its history<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>1981:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-j-geils-band-plays-last\/187039698\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">J.
