The move comes as Trump and Republicans are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/19\/politics\/congress-obamacare-subsidies-expiring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scrambling to deal<\/a> with steeply rising health insurance costs, particularly on the Affordable Care Act exchanges as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/18\/politics\/aca-subsidies-cheap-plans-enrollment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enhanced premium subsidies are set to expire<\/a> at year\u2019s end.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjdbchkr002k356pfhx13bp6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m going to call in the insurance companies that are making so much money, and they have to make less \u2013 a lot less,\u201d said Trump, who repeated his call that the federal government should give money <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/trump-administration-news-12-17-25?post-id=cmjatzsrf00053b6prjgbrrzt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">directly to Americans <\/a>to purchase coverage, instead of subsidizing insurers. \u201cMaybe we can have reasonable health care without having to cut them out.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjd4t2io0000356pvba00371@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He also praised the drug company leaders who appeared with him at the White House. The voluntary agreements announced Friday follow those made with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/30\/politics\/pfizer-drug-prices-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five drugmakers<\/a> \u2013 including the two manufacturers of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/06\/politics\/weight-loss-drugs-medicare-deals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blockbuster weight loss drugs<\/a> \u2013 as the White House races to expand an initiative that has become a centerpiece of the Trump administration\u2019s health care agenda. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/12\/politics\/trump-executive-order-prescription-drug-prices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cMost Favored Nation\u201d program<\/a> calls for drugmakers to price medications sold in the US at the lowest cost available in peer countries.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjd5mt6r000q356ppram3kdl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While Trump and administration officials repeatedly tout that the president\u2019s actions will lead to steep drops in drug prices, many experts are skeptical about how much Americans will benefit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjd5l2h4000l356pzqe6to4h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The drugmakers involved in Friday\u2019s White House event include: Amgen, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol Myers Squibb, Genentech, Gilead, GSK, Merck, Novartis and Sanofi. Their medications are taken by hundreds of millions of Americans to treat cancer, diabetes and autoimmune, dermatologic, neurologic, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, a senior administration official told reporters Friday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjd7bpgo0016356pejok2cw2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMFN has gone from a bold policy to an industry standard, and it\u2019s happened in record time,\u201d the official said. \u201cWhat we\u2019ve observed is initial industry hesitance collapsing into cooperation.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjd5hn2r000c356pk7ug18j7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            All nine are among the 12 remaining companies that had yet to strike agreements with the administration after Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/31\/politics\/trump-drug-price-lower-letter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sent letters<\/a> to 17 drugmakers in July with a specific list of demands to reduce prices.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjd5ymqt000y356pn39hqz6l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Under the deals, drugmakers have agreed to sell medicines to Medicaid at \u201cMost Favored Nation\u201d prices and to launch new medications in the US at that price point.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjd7c2rc0019356p7ig1lspk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The pharmaceutical makers have also agreed to sell certain primary care and specialty medicines on the TrumpRx online platform, which will become operational in January. The website will direct visitors to drugmakers\u2019 direct-to-consumer channels, where their products will be available at a discount to those paying cash and forgoing insurance.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjd7icyy001e356papc8tdgt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Plus, the nine companies have agreed to invest a total of more than $150 billion in new manufacturing projects and research and development in the US. In exchange, they\u2019ll receive a three-year reprieve on certain tariffs on pharmaceutical imports.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjd7w0he001n356pl7dqz1m0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In addition, several of the drugmakers have agreed to donate the active pharmaceutical ingredients, or APIs, needed to make certain critical medications to a national emergency stockpile, which Trump created in his first term. They will also convert the APIs into finished medicines if needed. Most APIs are imported, raising national security concerns.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjd5hn2r000h356ptbcd6pit@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump has touted the deals as major victories in driving down drug prices and alleviating a key cost-of-living concern.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjdbjpzz002q356prrm80u37@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is affordability in action,\u201d Mehmet Oz, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator, said at the event.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjdbjr8k002s356pcut6cf7y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet so far, the agreements only cover a tiny percentage of drugs available in the US \u2014 and it remains unclear whether they will translate into meaningful discounts for Americans. Part of the issue is that details remain scarce, experts say.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjd84l43001u356pljofy1ek@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Drugmakers have been willing to do these deals because they realize that they are \u201clargely inconsequential\u201d to their profit margins, said Chris Meekins, managing director of health policy research at Raymond James.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjd87oi7001y356pibwqwhuc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The TrumpRx direct-to-consumer portal may help some folks who can afford to pay cash for medications, but the vast majority of Americans will find it less expensive to go through their insurance, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjd899yx0021356pnsvijknh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The exception may be the GLP-1 drugs, such as Wegovy and Zepbound, since they aren\u2019t widely covered by insurers for weight loss. Certain medications will be available for as little as $149 per month and more Medicare enrollees will have access to them under deals announced last month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjd8fmtf0027356pze70nzbc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The current list price of the drugs ranges from roughly $1,000 to $1,350, though the ultimate cost for consumers depends on their insurance and on discounts.
