The reviews are in for Lincoln\u00a0Center Theater’s new production of\u00a0Amahl and the Night Visitors<\/a> Off-Broadway. Gian Carlo Mennotti’s family Christmas opera began previews at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater\u00a0December 16, for a limited run through January 4, 2026.<\/p>\n

Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato stars as Amahl’s Mother, with\u00a0Albert Rhodes Jr. as Amahl, a young boy whose home is visited by three kings\u00a0on their way to Bethlehem.\u00a0The cast also includes\u00a0Phillip Boykin as King Balthazar, Bernard Holcomb as King Kaspar, Todd Thomas as King Melchior, and Jonathan McCullough as the Page.<\/p>\n

Kenny Leon directs the production,\u00a0with music direction by Stephen Osgood, set design by Derek McLane, costume design by Emilio Sosa, lighting design by Adam Honor\u00e9, sound design by Marc Salzberg, and choreography by Ioana Alfonso. Casting is by The Telsey Office’s Karyn Casl and Destiny Lilly, and Met Opera casting consultants Melissa Wegner and Brian Speck. Bonnie Panson is the stage manager.<\/p>\n

Originally commissioned by NBC in 1951, Amahl and the Night Visitors was the first opera written for television. It premiered in a live telecast on Christmas eve, 1951, and had repeat performances for several years following.\u00a0Amahl and the Night Visitors was first produced on Broadway in 1970, paired on a double bill with Menotti’s sci-fi children’s opera\u00a0Help, Help, the Globolinks!<\/p>\n
