Redistributing their wealth?<\/p>\n<p>Ensuring that \u201csome animals are more equal than others,\u201d perhaps?<\/p>\n<p>OK, fine: After Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/19\/us-news\/zohran-mamdani-picks-julie-su-as-top-nyc-economic-justice-aide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">named Julie Su<\/a> to the job on Friday, he explained that she\u2019ll oversee agencies that focus on \u201cNew Yorkers everyday economic realities,\u201d including the Commission on Human Rights, the Taxi and Limousine Commission and the Department of Consumer and Worker Protections.<\/p>\n<p>But his transition staff made it sound like a lot more than that: Deputy Mayor Su is to \u201chelp usher in an era that protects working New Yorkers and consumers, delivering on an agenda that makes the city more affordable and ensures that those who work and toil here have the opportunity to live here as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsher in\u201d a new \u201cera\u201d to ensure that those who \u201ctoil\u201d can afford to live in the city \u2014 and we\u2019re pretty sure that doesn\u2019t mean Far Rockaway, Brownsville or Belmont \u2014 suggests an extremely aggressive brief for a deputy.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, Su has a big fan in Sen. Bernie Sanders, the socialist who only joins the Democratic Party when seeking its presidential nomination \u2014 while other, actual Democrats blocked her from being confirmed as federal labor secretary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a reason Julie Su\u2019s nomination failed to earn support from Democrats or Republicans,\u201d solidly conservative Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) told The Post, noting that at the Labor Department \u201cshe prioritized partisan activism over American workers and their families\u201d; that, he snarks, makes her\u00a0\u201ca perfect fit for the Mamdani administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGet opinions and commentary from our columnists\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSubscribe to our daily Post Opinion newsletter!\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Her biggest claim to fame dates back to her days as California\u2019s labor secretary \u2014 when she oversaw <a href=\"https:\/\/californiaglobe.com\/articles\/california-edd-blamed-fed-program-for-fraud-new-numbers-show-that-is-impossible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">up to $40 billion<\/a> in unemployment checks sent to fraudsters.<\/p>\n<p>In short, her record is about protecting union pay and privileges, while sending cash out the door in the name of a good cause without much attention to who really benefited.<\/p>\n<p>Asked to comment on her past, Mamdani bristled: \u201cI\u2019m aware of the deputy mayor\u2019s record, and I\u2019m very excited to have her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So begins Gotham\u2019s new era: As in the original \u201cWestworld,\u201d nothing can go worng.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"What the heck is a \u201cdeputy mayor for economic justice\u201d tasked with doing?
