While we often blame a lack of motivation and willpower, American board-certified gastroenterologist Dr Palaniappan Manickam disagrees.<\/p>\n<p>In an Instagram post on 18 December, he observed, \u201cIt\u2019s the daily habits silently blocking your fat loss.\u201d He went on to highlight the habits that stand in our way.<\/p>\n<p>    Under-eating to lose weight<\/p>\n<p>While reaching <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/lifestyle\/health\/chennai-fitness-coach-simplifies-weight-loss-in-3-easy-steps-and-calorie-deficit-is-the-name-of-the-game-101764916324612.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"calorie deficit\" rel=\"noopener\">calorie deficit<\/a> is important for losing weight, not eating enough is the wrong path to follow. \u201cChronic calorie restriction slows metabolism, raises cortisol, and trains the body to store fat,\u201d stated Dr Manickam.<\/p>\n<p> Snacking all day<\/p>\n<p>Snacking, or eating in between meals, is also detrimental to achieving weight-loss goals. Eating frequently keeps our insulin levels elevated, explained Dr Manickam. This blocks the burning of fat and metabolic flexibility.<\/p>\n<p> Skipping strength training<\/p>\n<p>Strength training, also known as resistance training, is exercising muscles against an external force to help grow and build strength and endurance. \u201cMuscle drives metabolism,\u201d noted the gastroenterologist. Working on cardio alone to hasten weight loss leads to muscle loss and failure to lose fat in the long term.<\/p>\n<p> Ignoring sleep quality<\/p>\n<p>Our body needs to rest well in order to function properly. Lack of quality sleep disrupts the hunger hormones, which increases craving and reduces the oxidation of fat, thereby obstructing weight loss.<\/p>\n<p> Low protein intake<\/p>\n<p>Lack of protein in the diet \u201creduces satiety, accelerates muscle loss, and slows down metabolic rate,\u201d warned Dr Manickam.<\/p>\n<p> Normalising chronic stress<\/p>\n<p>Chronic stress is harmful to both mental and physical health. In terms of weight loss, it keeps cortisol levels persistently high, which triggers the storage of fat, especially around the abdomen.<\/p>\n<p> Poor hydration<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLow water intake impairs fat metabolism, digestion, and appetite regulation,\u201d shared Dr Manickam.
