About 100,000 vehicles travel in the remote area each day, the Colorado Department of Transportation said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/governorsoffice.colorado.gov\/governor\/news\/cdot-completes-construction-i-25-greenland-wildlife-overpass-north-americas-largest-wildlife\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Dec. 16 news release;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Dec. 16 news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Greenland overpass allows elk, mule deer, black bears, mountain lions and other wildlife to safely cross on dirt and vegetation above six lanes of traffic. Prior to the system, transportation officials said there was an average of one wildlife crash per day during fall and spring wildlife movement seasons. Jared Polis said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The overpass is 200 feet wide and 209 feet long, covering 41,800 square feet, state officials said.\u00a0It was completed within a year, faster than projected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Meanwhile, in Southern California, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/historic-highway-overpass-animals-cost-100115264.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing is nearing completion;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing is nearing completion<\/a> between the Santa Monica Mountains and Simi Hills near Los Angeles, crossing one of the nation&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhwa.dot.gov\/policyinformation\/tables\/02.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:busiest roadways;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">busiest roadways<\/a>. Instead, the Annenberg overpass will help mountain lions, bobcats and coyotes avoid getting hit by cars on Highway 101, which divides habitats to the north and south.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The crossing is expected to open late 2026, according to a Caltrans spokesperson.
