Yes, you can call her \u201cThe Cookie Lady.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEverybody does,\u201d Dr. Deb Bash said with a giggle.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe go crazy at Christmas \u2013 what can I say.\u201d<\/p>\n
You can call this an annual baking Bash.<\/p>\n
Bash is a retired Scottsdale plastic surgeon who leads \u201coperation holiday cookies,\u201d an annual event at her home in Cave Creek along the North Scottsdale border.<\/p>\n
She and her family make not a few dozen \u2013 but a few hundred dozen.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe started it when I moved out here,\u201d she said. \u201cI grew up in Illinois, but then my parents moved to Scottsdale in 1994 and my sister moved here a few years later.\u201d<\/p>\n
Deb was living in Albuquerque and phoned Scottsdale. \u201cMom,\u201d she said, \u201cif I can bake with you all the time, I\u2019ll move back to Phoenix.\u201d<\/p>\n
Deal, her mother said.<\/p>\n
The first Christmas bakeoff in 2000 \u201cwas just the three of us,\u201d Bash said.<\/p>\n
Family members heard about this and started flying in from Pennsylvania and other parts of the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis year there\u2019ll be maybe 15 of us,\u201d Bash said.<\/p>\n
The ages of the bakers and helpers range from Bash’s father Ken, 90 years old, and 89-year-old mom Joyce to Henry Dervonis, Deb\u2019s 4 year-old great nephew.<\/p>\n
She expected this year\u2019s four-day operation to bake \u201cabout 4,000 cookies.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe biggest we\u2019ve done was 2019 \u2013 453 dozen. We usually do close to 400 dozen every year.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd we give them all away.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bash\u2019s parents, who live at a retirement center, take a few dozen to give to friends. Some family members fill suitcases and fly the baked loot home.<\/p>\n
Family members take cookies to fire stations, retirement homes, food banks and other community spots.<\/p>\n
Baking supplies?<\/p>\n
\u201cI work on it all year long,\u201d Bash said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have 60-70 pounds of butter in my freezer. A hundred pounds of flour. A hundred pounds of sugar.<\/p>\n
