(Image credit: JAXA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"6be4e409-a5bd-47b4-a96c-a9e3cf24a174\">The 10,580-pound (4,800 kilograms)<strong> <\/strong>Michibiki 5 was supposed to be part of Japan&#8217;s homegrown Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS), a navigation network in geosynchronous orbit high above Earth.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"6be4e409-a5bd-47b4-a96c-a9e3cf24a174-1\">&#8220;This system is compatible with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gps-what-is-it\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gps-what-is-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GPS satellites<\/a> and can be utilized with them in an integrated fashion,&#8221; Japanese officials wrote in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/qzss.go.jp\/en\/overview\/services\/sv02_why.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/qzss.go.jp\/en\/overview\/services\/sv02_why.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"noopener\">description of the QZSS project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;QZSW can be used even in the Asia-Oceania regions with longitudes close to Japan, so its usage will be expanded to other countries in these regions as well,&#8221; they added.<\/p>\n<p>The first QZSS satellite, a pathfinder, launched in September 2010. The system currently consists of four operational spacecraft, but Japan wants it to grow, as Sunday&#8217;s unsuccessful launch shows. It&#8217;s the successor to the H-2A, a workhorse launcher that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/japan-launching-of-gosat-gw-on-50th-and-final-liftoff-of-the-h-2a-rocket\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/japan-launching-of-gosat-gw-on-50th-and-final-liftoff-of-the-h-2a-rocket\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retired in June<\/a> after a quarter-century of orbital service.<\/p>\n<p>The H3 failed during its debut launch in March 2023 but bounced back with five consecutive successes \u2014 until Sunday night. JAXA has set up a task force headed by agency chief Hiroshi Yamakawa to help get to the bottom of the Michibiki 5 launch anomaly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We would like to express our deepest apology to many people and entities, particularly those related to the QZS-5, local organizations and the public, who had high expectations for this project,&#8221; JAXA officials wrote in Monday morning&#8217;s update.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The seventh-ever mission of Japan&#8217;s H3 rocket did not go according to plan.
