People calling 911 in Phoenix will now have a new option during the initial call intake. Starting Monday, December 15, 2025, 911 operators on both emergency and non-emergency lines will ask callers during the call, \u201cDo you need police, fire or behavioral health<\/b>?\u201d\n<\/p>\n

This addition comes after the Phoenix City Council unanimously adopted a series of measures aimed at modernizing public safety services and expanding community-focused support.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThis new option to request behavioral health help during a moment of crisis will help make Phoenix a safer community,\u201d Mayor Kate Gallego said. \u201cThis will help 911 dispatchers send the right people with the right training when it matters most.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

If the caller requests behavioral health, operators will still triage the call to determine whether a police or fire response is also necessary, or if behavioral health professionals can handle the call without police or fire assistance. When only behavioral health is needed, the call will be transferred to the Behavioral Health Dispatcher at the Phoenix Fire Department, who will deploy a Community Assistance Program (CAP) Team.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThe additional prompt will let callers know there\u2019s an option to get mental health services to someone in need,\u201d said Communications Bureau Administrator Allie Edwards. \u201cOur operators have been trained to ask additional questions in order to ensure the appropriate responders get dispatched.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The goal is to ensure the right help is sent to the right calls, reducing unnecessary police responses while providing faster, more specialized support for behavioral health-related emergencies.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Community Assistance Program is proud to support the integration of this new question into the 9-1-1 system,\u201d said Phoenix Fire Department Community Assistance Program Administrator DC Ernst. \u201cThis enhancement represents a critical step forward in ensuring individuals in crisis can quickly and clearly identify the behavioral health services they need. By streamlining this process, this update strengthens safety, transparency and care, ensuring residents receive the most effective response available for their situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
