He was 55.<\/p>\n<p>Zampella was one of two people who died Sunday afternoon in a car crash along Angeles Crest Highway, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/news\/local\/video-game-developer-vince-zampella-crash-call-of-duty\/3819576\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC 4 reported<\/a>. The crash involved a red 2026 Ferrari 296 GTS, and the identities of the deceased are pending release by the county coroner, said California Highway Patrol spokesperson Sgt. Daniel Keene. <\/p>\n<p>Zampella was a noted sports car collector, often sharing photos of his luxury vehicles and visits to car races on <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DQGXOZ4jpvt\/?img_index=6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an unimaginable loss, and our hearts are with Vince\u2019s family, his loved ones, and all those touched by his work,\u201d said the Electronic Arts representative in a statement. \u201cVince\u2019s influence on the video game industry was profound and far-reaching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> The CHP said in a Sunday news release that it received a call at 12:43 p.m. about a crash at Mile Post 62.70 of the scenic drive, which reopened in August after <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-08-29\/after-long-closure-scenic-angeles-crest-highway-reopens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a years-long closure due to storm damage<\/a>. Officers responded to the scene of the crash, and a preliminary investigation found that a car had been traveling southbound when, \u201cfor unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the roadway, struck a concrete barrier, and became fully engulfed,\u201d according to the release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe passenger was ejected from the vehicle, and the driver remained trapped,\u201d the CHP statement said. \u201cBoth parties succumbed to their injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Video emerged online showing a red Ferrari shooting out of a tunnel along the highway at a high speed, slamming into a concrete barrier where the road curved and erupting into flames. <\/p>\n<p>The 2026 Ferrari 296 GTS is a hybrid convertible powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 and an electric motor, producing a combined 819 horsepower.<\/p>\n<p>The scenic Angeles Crest Highway, which features 66 miles of mountainside twists and turns is a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/autos\/la-fi-hy-la-drives-angeles-crest-20160725-snap-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">favorite among motorcycle riders and car enthusiasts<\/a> but also has a track record of deadly and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/socal\/la-canada-valley-sun\/opinion\/tn-vsl-me-commentary-green-20171009-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dangerous crashes<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The CHP said Sunday it was unclear whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. <\/p>\n<p>Zampella was a formative figure in the modern gaming scene. Alongside Jason West and former creative partner Grant Collier, he co-founded the original \u201cCall of Duty\u201d studio, Infinity Ward, in 2002 and released the first installment of the first-person military shooting game in 2003. Activision acquired the studio that same year. Since its inception, \u201cCall of Duty\u201d has spawned dozens of sequels and spin-offs across various consoles and platforms, most recently \u201cCall of Duty: Black Ops 7,\u201d released in November. <\/p>\n<p>He and West, after an <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2010-apr-12-la-et-ct-callofduty12-2010apr12-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acrimonious split with Activision<\/a>, founded Respawn Entertainment in 2010.
