{"id":466115,"date":"2025-12-23T07:21:38","date_gmt":"2025-12-23T07:21:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/466115\/"},"modified":"2025-12-23T07:21:38","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T07:21:38","slug":"mamdani-announces-ftc-alum-sam-levine-to-head-department-of-consumer-and-worker-protection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/466115\/","title":{"rendered":"Mamdani announces FTC alum Sam Levine to head Department of Consumer and Worker Protection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced Monday his pick for leading the city<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dca\/index.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Consumer and Worker Protection<\/a> Department \u2014 a key agency in pressing his aggressive pro-worker agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Sam Levine, who previously worked at the Federal Trade Commission in the Biden administration, will serve in the role.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani, at a lower Manhattan news conference announcing the appointment, praised Levine as \u201cunafraid to take on entrenched interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe will make [ Consumer and Worker Protection] a force to be reckoned with, one that refuses to allow corporations to treat their employees as expendable,\u201d the mayor-elect said. \u201cWhen he succeeds, that success will be felt in a city that is vibrant with flourishing small businesses, in markets full of people who can afford to buy gifts and goods for themselves and their loved ones, in workers who know that their leaders, in fact, have their backs, and in an economy that is fairer and more accessible for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The agency is a <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1pem255jxQEoWCN3Ic5ILZa2a9a4oDtqe\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crucial part<\/a> of Mamdani\u2019s agenda, and the incoming mayor has said he intends to remodel the agency into an aggressive consumer watchdog. (Photo by CHARLY TRIBALLEAU \/ AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs commissioner for the Department of Consumer [and Worker Protection], I\u2019ll make sure that every gig worker, small-business owner, independent contractor and consumer, knows their rights and knows with confidence that they have a champion in the city government,\u201d Levine said.<\/p>\n<p>The pick garnered praise from Lina Khan, the FTC chairwoman in the Biden administration and a co-chairwoman of Mamdani\u2019s transition team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLevine is an extraordinary public servant who will enforce the law without fear or favor, ensuring that consumers and workers across NYC get a fair shake,\u201d she wrote on social media.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor-elect also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/12\/19\/mamdani-names-two-deputy-mayors-creates-new-department-of-economic-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently appointed Julie Su<\/a> as his deputy mayor for economic justice, a brand-new role. Su was acting U.S. labor secretary under President Joe Biden.
