{"id":467199,"date":"2025-12-23T19:04:15","date_gmt":"2025-12-23T19:04:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/467199\/"},"modified":"2025-12-23T19:04:15","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T19:04:15","slug":"campaign-signs-altered-with-the-grinch-but-vandalism-carries-legal-consequences-in-texas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/467199\/","title":{"rendered":"Campaign signs altered with the Grinch, but vandalism carries legal consequences in Texas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 People around San Antonio may have noticed the Grinch\u2019s face plastered on a politician\u2019s campaign signs this holiday season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/VoteLizCampos\/posts\/pfbid023JGVLaNeXpbJ9rpZYrayuj92f8v6aTHN2nmcpUQxTrpBdndVEFViyYEqL7wwv9z6l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/VoteLizCampos\/posts\/pfbid023JGVLaNeXpbJ9rpZYrayuj92f8v6aTHN2nmcpUQxTrpBdndVEFViyYEqL7wwv9z6l\">Facebook post<\/a> on Sunday, Elizabeth \u201cLiz\u201d Campos, incumbent Democratic candidate for Texas House District 119, wrote that people were messaging her about the Grinch\u2019s face replacing her own on her holiday campaign signs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"> \u201cI love the Grinch, he\u2019s my fav,\u201d she wrote, later posting a photo of her with the popular character from Dr. Seuss\u2019 \u201cHow the Grinch Stole Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">While the mischief brought a light-hearted reaction to the candidate herself, tampering with political signs is illegal in Texas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/statutes.capitol.texas.gov\/?tab=1&amp;code=PE&amp;chapter=PE.28&amp;artSec=28.03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/statutes.capitol.texas.gov\/?tab=1&amp;code=PE&amp;chapter=PE.28&amp;artSec=28.03\">Texas Penal Code<\/a> treats such tampering as property damage and criminal mischief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The law defines criminal mischief as someone who:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Intentionally marks, draws or paints on someone\u2019s tangible property.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Intentionally or knowingly damages or destroys someone\u2019s property.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Damages property that results in financial loss.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">Read the full definition <a href=\"https:\/\/statutes.capitol.texas.gov\/?tab=1&amp;code=PE&amp;chapter=PE.28&amp;artSec=28.03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/statutes.capitol.texas.gov\/?tab=1&amp;code=PE&amp;chapter=PE.28&amp;artSec=28.03\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">If caught, the suspect can face fines and jail time, depending on the type of offense and losses incurred by the owner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">KSAT reached out to Campos for a statement. We will keep moving forward with positivity. And I embrace the Grinch as he has attracted more voters to support and besides at the end he has a huge heart and saved the residents of Whoville.
