JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 A major investment could help fix years of utility problems in one Jacksonville neighborhood.<\/p>\n
The Florida Department of Commerce gave JEA a $20 million grant to support the rebuilding of the Normandy Village wastewater infrastructure. <\/p>\n
For years, neighbors have complained about the Normandy Village Utility Company.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe biggest thing was lack of communication,\u201d Normandy Village resident Sheryl Verner said. \u201cWhether it was your billing was incorrect, or you didn\u2019t receive a bill, or there was a water outages, or your pressure was way down.\u201d<\/p>\n
These concerns are something Action News Jax has been reporting on since 2016.<\/p>\n
But now those issues could soon see a solution with the money from the state.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s wonderful,\u201d Verner said. \u201cI mean, it\u2019s something that absolutely has to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n
In September, JEA was appointed as the receiver of the Normandy Village Utilities Water and Sewer Systems.<\/p>\n
That decision came after customers voiced complaints about the utility at a town hall meeting held by Jacksonville City Council Member Tyrona Clark-Murray. Solutions discussed after decades of complaints against a small Jacksonville utility company \u2013 Action News Jax<\/a><\/p>\n Since JEA stepped in, it has identified critical deficiencies, including failing gravity mains, compromised manholes, and a wastewater treatment facility that is no longer viable for safe rehabilitation.<\/p>\n \u201cI think we all knew it was in bad shape, but I don\u2019t think any of us knew it was in bad of shape as it was,\u201d Verner said.<\/p>\n A JEA spokesperson told Action News Jax it will take some time for them to receive the contract related to the grant.
