Compiled by LAPL staff across the system, the list highlights books that earned strong internal recommendations throughout 2025. These titles all\u00a0secured a 6\u20137 rating or higher from people whose job description essentially includes knowing what\u2019s worth your time. The recommendations span fiction, nonfiction, children\u2019s books, teen picks and graphic novels, offering something for just about every kind of reader.<\/p>\n

The fiction list<\/a> alone covers a wide range of moods and genres, from buzzy contemporary novels to cozy fantasy and darker, stranger fare. Highlights include Atmosphere: A Love Story<\/strong> by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Ocean Vuong\u2019s The Emperor of Gladness<\/strong> and Travis Baldree\u2019s Brigands & Breadknives<\/strong>, alongside plenty of thrillers, speculative stories and literary heavy-hitters.<\/p>\n

Standouts include Carl Zimmer\u2019s Air-borne: The Hidden History of the Life We Breathe<\/strong>, John Green\u2019s Everything is Tuberculosis<\/strong> and Karen Hao\u2019s Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman\u2019s OpenAI<\/strong>, touching on science, history, culture and the uneasy present.<\/p>\n

For younger readers, LAPL\u2019s children\u2019s picks<\/a> are imaginative and genuinely fun to read aloud. Titles like Dan Santat\u2019s All the Hulk Feels<\/strong>, Axolotl and Axolittle<\/strong> by Jess Hitchman, and Claudia Said S\u00ed!: The Story of Mexico\u2019s First Woman President<\/strong> by Deborah Bodin Cohen offer a mix of comfort, curiosity and inspiration.<\/p>\n

Teen readers get their own strong slate<\/a> of page-turners and big-feelings books, including Suzanne Collins\u2019 Sunrise on the Reaping<\/strong>, Jason Reynolds\u2019 Coach<\/strong> and Lili Wilkinson\u2019s moody dark-academia novel Unhallowed Halls<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
