Pat Finn, a veteran comedy actor known for playing the Heck family\u2019s friendly neighbor Bill Norwood on \u201cThe Middle<\/a>,\u201d died Monday, reportedly following a three-year battle with cancer. He was 60. <\/p>\n

\u201cAfter a beautiful life filled with laughter, love, family, and friends, we share the heartbreaking news of the death of Pat Finn,\u201d Finn\u2019s family said in a statement to multiple<\/a> outlets<\/a>. Finn\u2019s manager, Andrea Pett-Joseph, who described the actor as \u201cthe kindest, most joyful person in any room, told Deadline<\/a> that he died surrounded by his family and friends. His death was first reported by TMZ<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Finn broke into show business in the 1990s, appearing in various sitcoms. His first major role was on \u201cThe George Wendt<\/a> Show,\u201d where he played Dan Coleman, the brother of Wendt\u2019s character, George Coleman. He also had a recurring role on \u201cMurphy Brown<\/a>\u201d as Phil Jr., the son of the original owner and bartender of Phil\u2019s Bar (portrayed by Pat Corley<\/a>) who took over the establishment in later seasons. <\/p>\n

\u201dSeinfeld<\/a>\u201d fans might remember Finn from his role as Joe Mayo in \u201cThe Reverse Peephole\u201d episode. He also portrayed alternate-universe Monica\u2019s boyfriend Dr. Roger in a couple of episodes of \u201cFriends<\/a>.\u201d Finn\u2019s credits also included roles on \u201cThe Drew Carey Show,\u201d \u201c3rd Rock From the Sun,\u201d \u201cThat \u201970s Show,\u201d \u201cCurb Your Enthusiasm,\u201d \u201cThe Bernie Mac Show,\u201d \u201c2 Broke Girls\u201d and \u201cThe Goldbergs.\u201d His most recent credits included the films \u201cUnexpected\u201d (2023) and \u201cDiamond in the Rough\u201d (2022). <\/p>\n

Born in Evanston, Ill., Finn attended Marquette University in the 1980s, where he met his future wife, Donna, and Chris Farley<\/a>, with whom he became friends. After graduating, Finn, along with Farley<\/a>, joined Chicago\u2019s Second City to hone his comedy chops. <\/p>\n

In a 2022 interview published on Phoenix.org<\/a>, Finn said he\u2019d always gravitated toward comedy. <\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom and I watched \u2018The Carol Burnett Show\u2019 and \u2018The Odd Couple,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cI really liked the idea of sitcoms. Growing up in Chicago, nobody said they wanted to be an actor. They wanted to be firefighters or in sales. … A career in comedy didn\u2019t become a reality until I was picked up by The Second City and then the main stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to a statement provided to the New York Post<\/a>, Finn was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2022. Although he went into remission, the cancer later returned and metastasized. <\/p>\n

A lifelong Bears fan, Finn \u201coften showed the biggest signs when the Bears scored a touchdown\u201d in his final days, the statement from the actor\u2019s family said. \u201cNo pressure Bears \u2014 just saying \u2014 do it for Pat.\u201d <\/p>\n
