{"id":470096,"date":"2025-12-25T05:04:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-25T05:04:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/470096\/"},"modified":"2025-12-25T05:04:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-25T05:04:17","slug":"north-korea-reveals-new-images-of-its-first-nuclear-powered-submarine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/470096\/","title":{"rendered":"North Korea reveals new images of its first nuclear-powered submarine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      Seoul, South Korea<br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjku95c400ch28qtfp7pb3w2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            North Korea on Thursday released new images of what it claims is its first nuclear-powered submarine, a massive vessel equal in size to some of the United States Navy\u2019s attack subs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkuaiyc00023b6n3cg1i7l0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The pictures released by state media showed leader Kim Jong Un inspecting the guided-missile submarine at an indoor construction facility, indicating it has not yet been launched.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkuaiyc00033b6np1z98tdd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Building a nuclear-powered submarine has been a long-held goal for Kim, who first discussed it at a ruling party congress in 2021, but the fact its rival, South Korea, has recently being given the blessing of the Trump administration to pursue its own nuclear-powered subs appears to have added urgency to Kim\u2019s plans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkvah2m00003b6psxrl55vn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Such vessels come with many advantages. They can stay submerged for long periods of time \u2013 essentially for years, if they can carry enough provisions for the crew \u2013 whereas most conventionally powered subs must surface for air to run diesel engines, which in turn charge their batteries for running at depth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkvk1v600083b6py5dp4o37@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They are also generally faster than conventionally powered subs and are in many cases quieter. Currently only the United States, Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom and India possess the technology.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkuaiyc00043b6n1yrangq1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The images released Thursday show substantial progress had been made on the sub, the existence of which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/08\/asia\/north-korea-nuclear-submarine-int-latam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first announced in March<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkuaiyc00053b6njklmz2zb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            State media said the vessel had a displacement of 8,700 tons, making it an equal to most of the nuclear-powered Virginia-class attack subs in the US fleet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkuaiyc00063b6ntkr5yv63@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Thursday, Kim again stressed its importance of the vessels to Pyongyang\u2019s defense policy, which he said was \u201cliterally\u2026 based on the strongest offensive power,\u201d according to a Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) report.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkuaiyc00073b6nen5pl1uw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe regard the super-powerful offensive capability as the best shield for national security in developing the armed forces,\u201d KCNA reported Kim as saying.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img Noting the US support, Kim said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/20\/asia\/south-korea-nuclear-powered-submarines-intl-hnk-ml-dst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Korea building a nuclear-powered submarine<\/a> was an action that violated North Korean security and was a threat that needed to be countered, the report said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkuaiyc00093b6n4oct88lj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Pyongyang itself is responsible for heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, said Leif-Eric Easley, professor of international studies at Ewha Womans University in Seoul.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkuaiyc000a3b6nie69rlk1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kim \u201cis probably right that a buildup of nuclear-powered submarines will increase instability around the Korean Peninsula, but he has himself to blame for the arms race,\u201d Easley said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkuaiyc000b3b6nwjyw2anq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is Pyongyang that disavows diplomacy with Seoul, threatens its neighbors with nuclear weapons, and deepens the suffering of its own people by devoting massive resources to military dictatorship rather than economic development,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkuaiyc000c3b6nvut0822b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kim has been overseeing a large buildup in his country\u2019s military capabilities as part of that five-year plan unveiled in 2021.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkuaiyc000d3b6nscih7390@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those include a range of missiles, including ballistic missiles that can reach the US mainland, hypersonic glide vehicles that could be difficult to defend against, and, at sea, two new guided-missile destroyers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkuaiyc000e3b6njfx4uncq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The second of those made headlines earlier this year when it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/05\/asia\/north-korea-refloats-destroyer-capsized-during-launch-intl-hnk-ml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">capsized on launch<\/a>. The warship was subsequently refloated and apparently repaired.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkuaiyc000f3b6nf0dcdmv7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The build of the destroyers and nuclear submarines marked \u201ca leap forward in bolstering up the combat capabilities of our fleets,\u201d Kim said while inspecting the new sub, according to KCNA.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkuaiyc000g3b6nldcq3y8y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But, even so, Easley notes North Korea\u2019s fleet remains inferior to the South\u2019s, which boasts some of the world\u2019s best guided-missile destroyers and new conventionally powered submarines.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkuaiyc000h3b6nm9rnsbo2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cKim may realize that he has miscalculated once he observes South Korea\u2019s superior technology,\u201d Easley said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkuaiyc000i3b6nbq6k06tq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            North Korea\u2019s one advantage may be having nuclear-powered submarines sooner.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkvcq9n00033b6pwwtyivx4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            South Korea has wanted them for decades, but a decades-old nuclear agreement with the US had prevented it from building them, until October, when President Trump appeared to clear the path.
