{"id":470720,"date":"2025-12-25T12:19:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-25T12:19:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/470720\/"},"modified":"2025-12-25T12:19:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-25T12:19:16","slug":"trump-backed-candidate-asfura-declared-winner-of-honduras-presidential-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/470720\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump-backed candidate Asfura declared winner of Honduras&#8217; presidential vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) \u2014 Trump-backed candidate Nasry Asfura won <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/honduras\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Honduras\u2019<\/a> presidential election, electoral authorities said Wednesday afternoon, ending a weeks-long count that has whittled away at the credibility of the Central American nation\u2019s fragile electoral system.<\/p>\n<p>The election is continuing Latin America\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/election-chile-kast-jara-boric-trump-05f915fd5eda909c13fd283f90f8d8e5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swing to the right<\/a>, coming just a week after Chile chose the far-right politician <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/chile-elections-jose-antonio-kast-jara-gabriel-boric-trump-e09ac673bfa15364251a5d324b97dc41\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jos\u00e9 Antonio Kast<\/a> as its next president.<\/p>\n<p>Asfura, of the conservative National Party, received 40.27% of the vote in the Nov. 30 vote, edging out four-time candidate Salvador Nasralla of the conservative Liberal Party, who finished with 39.53% of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>Honduras\u2019 president-elect<\/p>\n<p>The former mayor of Honduras\u2019 capital Tegucigalpa, won in his second bid for the presidency, after he and Nasralla were neck-and-neck during a weeks-long vote count that fueled international concern.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday night a number of electoral officials and candidates were already fighting and contesting the results of the election. I extend my hand so we can walk together with determination to work tirelessly for Honduras. I will not fail you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The results were a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/honduras-trump-castro-zelaya-corruption-1fea54ad5b4a07cd576d79ec91b9f6c0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rebuke of the current leftist leader<\/a>, and her governing democratic socialist Liberty and Re-foundation Party, known as LIBRE, whose candidate finished in a distant third place with 19.19% of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>Trump takes a spotlight in Honduras<\/p>\n<p>Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Asfura on Wednesday, writing on a post on X: \u201cThe people of Honduras have spoken &#8230; (the Trump administration) looks forward to working with his administration to advance prosperity and security in our hemisphere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The European Union and a number of right-leading leaders across Latin America, namely Trump-ally Argentine President Javier Milei, also congratulated the politician.<\/p>\n<p>Asfura ran as a pragmatic politician, pointing to his popular infrastructure projects in the capital. If he is truly worthy of your backing, if his hands are clean, if he has nothing to fear, then why doesn\u2019t he allow for every vote to be counted?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He and other opponents of Asfura have maintained that Trump\u2019s last-minute endorsement was an act of electoral interference that ultimately swung the results of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>A chaotic election<\/p>\n<p>The unexpectedly tumultuous election was also marred by a sluggish vote count, which fueled even more accusations.<\/p>\n<p>The Central American nation was stuck in limbo for more than three weeks as vote counting by electoral authorities lagged, and at one point <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/honduras-presidential-election-special-count-73f142db3a87a85494bf70887e0ecb24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was paralyzed after a special count<\/a> of final vote tallies was called, fueling warnings by international leaders.<\/p>\n<p>After expressing democratic concern about the lack of results days before, Organization of American States Secretary General Albert Rambin wrote Wednesday on X that the OAS \u201ctakes note\u201d of the results announced and noted it is \u201cclosely following events in Honduras.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"image-d20000\"\/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"Supporters of the National Party celebrate after the National Electoral Council declared presidential candidate Nasry Asfura the winner of Honduras' presidential election in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2025. She was elected in 2021 on a promise to reduce violence and root out corruption.<\/p>\n<p>She was among a group of progressive leaders in Latin American who were elected on a hopeful message of change around five years ago but are now being cast out after failing to deliver on their visions. Castro said last week that she would accept the results of the elections even after she claimed that Trump\u2019s actions in the election amounted to an \u201celectoral coup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Eric Olson, an independent international observer during the Honduran election with the Seattle International Foundation, said the rejection of Castro and her party was so definitive that they had little room to contest the results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery few people, even within LIBRE, believe they won the election.
