{"id":470726,"date":"2025-12-25T12:23:33","date_gmt":"2025-12-25T12:23:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/470726\/"},"modified":"2025-12-25T12:23:33","modified_gmt":"2025-12-25T12:23:33","slug":"community-reacts-to-hurtful-remarks-by-school-board-member-demands-for-his-resignation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/470726\/","title":{"rendered":"Community reacts to \u2018hurtful\u2019 remarks by school board member, demands for his resignation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CLAY COUNTY \u2014 Clay County District 2 School Board Member Robert Alvero is under fire after remarks he made about the Black community were posted on social media.<\/p>\n<p>In a since-deleted Facebook video, Alvero said he found the majority of African American people he had been around to be \u201cnasty, rude and problematic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have had 80% more negative experience with the African American community in this country than with White people,\u201d Alvero remarked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat being said, [that] doesn\u2019t mean I haven\u2019t had good experiences with African American people. I have met a lot of great African American people. And I [am] still friends with them because [they\u2019re] good, decent people. But that\u2019s the 20% of the people I have met,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Alvero referenced his understanding of Nick Fuentes, a political commentator who has made various controversial statements sparking controversy and debate on race and cultural stereotypes. Alvero said he agreed with Fuentes\u2019 statement that &#8220;everybody has a little bit of racism in them.\u201d Being Cuban, he said, he has also had racial bias against his own ethnicity.<\/p>\n<p>Following the video\u2019s release, Facebook users took to the comments to share their concerns and thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResign. Now,\u201d one said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnybody that followed his candidacy for school board is not surprised, by this,\u201d said another. \u201cOnly shaking my head at him posting this video himself. We knew these were his views.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some commentators agreed with Alvero\u2019s statements, and others called on his First Amendment right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t see anything wrong with what he said. He\u2019s telling \u201chis&#8221; truth. What he has encountered. This is his experience,\u201d another wrote.<\/p>\n<p>School Board Chair Erin Skipper released a statement saying that she was aware of Alvero\u2019s comments. She said she hoped Alvero &#8220;does the right thing and considers resigning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe remarks do not reflect the values of our school district and are unacceptable,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Skipper said the board plans to discuss the matter at its next meeting on Jan. 8.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican Party of Clay County also made a statement publicly demanding Alvero\u2019s resignation, calling his comments \u201churtful\u201d and \u201cdisappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClay County elected officials should always hold themselves to a higher standard and represent all people regardless of ethnicity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Alvero has since responded to the controversy, stating that his comments were taken out of context.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could have explained it better,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat I meant to say is that cultural differences can lead to misunderstandings, but despite that, people can move past these differences and become good friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Alvero represents the Oakleaf area, where more than 20% of residents identify as Black or African American.
