He\u2019d delivered MedCAD\u2019s donated implants and surgical plans twice before, but this was the first time Hairston traveled 6,000 miles with him to participate.<\/p>\n<p>Business Briefing<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmnc_features-cta-social-article-cta-social-module__3beff secondaryRoman secondaryRoman-20 text-center text-gray-dark\">Become a business insider with the latest news.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmnc_features-cta-social-article-cta-social-module__8MgJa flex flex-wrap text-gray-dark secondaryRoman secondaryRoman-10 text-center justify-center\">By signing up, you agree to our\u00a0<a class=\"dmnc_features-cta-social-article-cta-social-module__lU9-l border-b border-gray-dark hover_border-0 focus_border-0 active_border-0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/help\/terms-of-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terms of Service<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"dmnc_features-cta-social-article-cta-social-module__lU9-l border-b border-gray-dark hover_border-0 focus_border-0 active_border-0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/help\/privacy-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Privacy Policy.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">This year\u2019s U.S. team, which also included three reconstructive and ocular surgeons from other parts of the country, operated alongside Ukrainian doctors and nurses under the constant threat of ballistic missile attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">They had an app on their phones signaling in real time that a Russian attack was imminent and to seek immediate shelter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThe Ukrainians are smart and very capable doctors,\u201d Corona said. \u201cBeing there with them shows that they have not been forgotten.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">These missions, Vision for Ukraine, were made possible by Dallas-based LEAP Global Missions, which sponsors teams to deliver care to underserved international communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Most of the 50 or so surgeries performed during this mission involved eye sockets, eyeballs and facial injuries. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Hairston provided implants and surgical plans for five patients who had gaping holes in their skulls and jaws, working in the operating room with the combined surgical teams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">All told, MedCAD has donated devices for 16 patients in the three missions that would have cost a total of nearly $200,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">She met the Ukrainian soldier who received two MedCAD implants a year ago to repair the orbital floor where his prosthetic eyeball sits and a cheek implant for his crushed face. \u201cHe speaks perfect English,\u201d Hairston said. \u201cHe was incredibly grateful, and it was so special to hear that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">She had a few takeaways from what she describes as a life-changing experience. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">First and foremost, Hairston was shocked to see that the major cities aren\u2019t \u201ca smoldering hellscape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cBoth Lviv and Kyiv are functioning, bustling, busy towns that if you were visiting from another planet, you wouldn\u2019t necessarily know that there was a war going on,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was a revelation to see people in cafes, living their lives \u2014 even though they\u2019re living under a lot of stress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cIt also blows my mind that to most people in the United States, it seems like this is happening on the moon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cAnother thing is that this is like World War I. They are literally fighting on the front line in the eastern part of the country \u2014 gaining 50 yards today, and losing 100 yards tomorrow.
