2025 was a whirlwind for Sandra Bernhard<\/a>, who turned 70 years old in June. Her career hit a hot streak with gigs on \u201cRuPaul\u2019s Drag Race<\/a>,\u201d the acclaimed Apple+ series \u201cSeverance<\/a>,\u201d Disney\u2019s \u201cPercy Jackson & The Olympians\u201d<\/a> and the star-studded \u201cMarty Supreme,.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n

This weekend, she\u2019s holding court at Joe\u2019s Pub for the 19th year in a row. She said she prefers the venue for its intimacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s just something about the energy of [this] particular space,\u201d Bernard tells The Daily News. \u201cIt just comes to life for me, and it\u2019s a historical building; the Public Theater, and it\u2019s just that it\u2019s the continuity, over all the years, of such incredible shows that have come out of there, just historical, great shows. And so to be a part of that, it just means a lot to me. And I like to think that I have my place in history and then I can recreate it every year, and that that\u2019s really what it\u2019s about for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bernhard, who will be accompanied by her longtime musical director Mitch Kaplan<\/a> and the Sandyland Squad Band, says the name of this year\u2019s show comes from real life.<\/p>\n

She explained: \u201cThe title is really a personal thing [because] I\u2019m always getting involved in doing favors for friends\u2026and [my wife] Sarah always says to me: \u2018Why did you do that? Why did you pick up the phone on the first ring?\u2019 or \u2018Call back after you had a chance to think about it?\u2019 And I always say \u2018I was caught off guard,\u2019 and she goes, \u2018Well, you\u2019re not going to be happy about that the day of.\u2019 And she\u2019s always right, because I\u2019m not. So that\u2019s the personal explanation of that title. But in the same vein, we\u2019re all caught off guard every day by what\u2019s happening to our government, our society, our culture. So it kind of works on two levels.\u201d<\/p>\n

As ambitious shoe salesman Marty Mauser, the \u201cCall Me By Your Name\u201d<\/a> star takes on his most challenging role to date and aces it.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarty Supreme<\/a>\u201d runs two and a half hours, but the fast-moving film seems half as long. The first-rate cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow<\/a>, Odessa A\u2019zion, Tyler the Creator, \u201cShark Tank\u201d<\/a> mogul Kevin O\u2019Leary, Fran Drescher,<\/a> Sandra Bernhard, Isaac Mizrahi and Faith Evans\u2019<\/a> longtime manager Cheryl Flowers-Briggs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The event, produced by Eugene Wintour-Irverstag<\/a>, will feature overtures from Rossini\u2019s \u201cGuillaume Tell\u201d<\/a> and Ambroise Thomas\u2019s \u201cMignon,\u201d<\/a> as well as arias and ensembles from \u201cRusalka,\u201d \u201cIl Trovatore,<\/a>\u201d \u201cMacbeth,\u201d \u201cRigoletto\u201dand \u201cLa traviata,<\/a>\u201d among others.<\/p>\n

Friday marks the start of Kwanzaa \u2014 the seven-day holiday honoring African heritage \u2014 and the kickoff of the Brooklyn Museum\u2019s 18th year of what it designates as the city\u2019s \u201clargest family Kwanzaa celebration.\u201d The five-day event features live performances, drumming workshops and art activities in partnership with the Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cKwanzaa is rooted in everything we stand for community, culture, and connection,\u201d Asase Yaa\u2019s executive director Kofi Osei Williams<\/a> said. \u201cEach year, we have the opportunity to share our traditions with new generations and remind families that the principles of Kwanzaa are not just seasonal, but a way of life.\u201d<\/p>\n

There will also be daily candle-lighting rituals, a herbal sensory exploration with Brooklyn Supported Agriculture Community and Afrobeat, dancehall and soca dance workshops.<\/p>\n

For \u201cBeau the Musical,\u201d the award-winning playwright behind Broadway\u2019s \u201cChicken & Biscuits<\/a>\u201d and the off-Broadway play \u201cTable 17\u201d collaborated with composer Ethan D. Pakchar for nearly a decade to craft the story of a young queer man in Tennessee who discovers his grandfather, thought to be long deceased, is actually still alive.<\/p>\n

Boston Conservatory at Berklee<\/a> alum Matt Rodin<\/a> stars in the titular role in the Josh Rhodes-helmed production where audience members find themselves fully immersed in the coming of age story, with a real-life distillery as its backdrop. 2025 Tony Award nominee Jeb Brown<\/a>, Amelia Cormack, Andrea Goss, Ryan Halsaver, Miyuki Miyagi, Max Sangerman and Derek Stoltenberg round out the diverse cast of eight.<\/p>\n

\u201cPart of my inspiration was creating what I call a \u2018Rent\u2019 meets \u2018Once,\u2019 but queer,\u201d said Lyons. \u201cAnd this experiment of really trying to find remarkable quadruple threats who can sing, you know, move, act and play instruments was a challenge\u2026And I have so much respect for the actor\/musician community \u2026 because what they do is, it\u2019s hard.\u201d<\/p>\n
