{"id":471132,"date":"2025-12-25T17:11:15","date_gmt":"2025-12-25T17:11:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/471132\/"},"modified":"2025-12-25T17:11:15","modified_gmt":"2025-12-25T17:11:15","slug":"a-territory-shattered-gaza-faces-years-of-recovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/471132\/","title":{"rendered":"A territory shattered: Gaza faces years of recovery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite a fragile US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire.<\/p>\n<p><b>By Nathan Morley<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The truce, in place since October after two years of hostilities, has brought a pause in fighting \u2014 but not in suffering.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Across the enclave, destruction and displacement are staggering.\u00a0Families live in tents and improvised shelters, with the UN Development Programme warning of a critical need for safe, durable housing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Food insecurity is acute.\u00a0The World Food Programme reports that most households cannot afford basic staples, and daily consumption remains well below pre-war levels.\u00a0While nutrition indicators have improved since August \u2014 when famine was detected \u2014 more than half a million people still face \u201cemergency\u201d levels of hunger.\u00a0Over 100,000 are classified as living in \u201ccatastrophe,\u201d the highest level of alert.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Beyond immediate needs, the scale of destruction is staggering. According to UN satellite analysis, 81 percent of Gaza\u2019s structures were damaged as of October.\u00a0Hospitals, schools and homes lie in ruins.\u00a0The scale of reconstruction is immense.<\/p>\n<p>The UN has described it as potentially the largest post-war rebuilding effort since World War Two, with recent estimates placing the cost at more than $70 billion \u2014 a task that could span decades.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Despite a fragile US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire.
