What began as a job opportunity in 1990 turned into a decades-long career built from the ground up. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Brown now oversees more than 500 buses and a workforce of roughly 2,300 employees who keep San Antonio moving every single day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of pride. I\u2019ve been blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by a lot of great minds and great people at VIA,\u201d Brown said. \u201cEveryone has the same thing in common\u2014to give back and help the community. I\u2019ve just continued to work, grow and stay thankful for the blessings along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">That journey almost didn\u2019t happen without a little friendly trash talk. Brown credits a former coworker \u2014 sporting a VIA bus operator uniform and bragging about the pay and benefits \u2014 for planting the seed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI made a wise crack,\u201d Brown said. \u201cTwo weeks later, I was on vacation and decided to apply. The rest is history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">More than three decades later, Brown remains focused on what\u2019s next, especially as San Antonio continues to grow. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A major priority on his desk right now is VIA\u2019s Rapid Green Line project, a transformative north-to-south route designed to connect the region with faster, more frequent service. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s all about supporting the Green Line. It will connect the north and south of the entire region in new ways,\u201d Brown said. \u201cCustomers will wait less, get more done, and ride in a comfortable environment with brand-new vehicles. There\u2019s a convergence of technology and community needs happening in this city in a brand-new way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The planned route will stretch from the airport area through the mall and downtown areas, then south along St. Mary\u2019s Street and Roosevelt Avenue. An extension reaches near Brooks City Base, linking key parts of the city like never before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Despite his senior role, Brown isn\u2019t one to stay behind a desk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI\u2019m not one of those that sits at my desk much,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m moving around to different departments, different areas\u2014checking the temperature, making sure everyone\u2019s engaged and still focused on creating the best experience for our customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">After 36 years, Brown has no plans to slow down\u2014only to keep San Antonio moving forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\"><b>Watch the full Pickup Lines with Brown in the video player above.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Zuniga started Pickup Lines, a digital talk show, straight from his vehicle.
